After forever, I discreetly check my watch. It’s 9:22. They’ve had seven minutes in the safe.
“I want to kiss you.” She puts two flat hands on my cheeks. “Please, let me kiss you.”
My mistake is looking in her eyes. That’s how she sees the truth in mine.
“Matt.” Her eyes dart around my face. She tries to kiss me, but I turn my head to the side. “What’s wrong?”
I take a deep breath, trying to find my focus, reminding myself why this is the plan and why it’s the only way.
I exhale.
“I can’t do this.”
“What? Can’t do what?”
I release her legs, forcing her to stand up again.
“I’m sorry, Natasha,” I murmur, putting a strand of light brown hair behind her ear at the same time as I reach for the back of my jeans. “I’m going to hurt you now.”
She knows this time it isn’t our little game, but she doesn’t have time to react. I slam the handle of my gun against her temple, and she crumbles to the ground.
“Ah, fuck,” I huff, running a hand across my face.
I grab my phone and call Jade right away. “Put your mask on and bring the van to the back alley.Now.”
I reach inside my suit, grabbing my own mask and putting it on.
I open the elevator again, running to the safe.
Kay is already outside, and I count fourteen bags at her feet, meaning Ethan is in the vault.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” she hisses. “We’re not done.”
“Put your mask on.”
“No…Elliot. What did you do?”
I don’t answer, running to my brother.
He looks at me, and he doesn’t need to ask. He knows.
“Grab those two bags,” he orders as he puts on his Scream mask. “I’ll be right behind you.”
He knows I couldn’t do it. He probably already knew before I showed up.
How could any of us ever betray Jade? Even if it’s planned.
No one could ever replace her.

“Drive!” Kay shouts at me as Ethan throws the last bag in the van and jumps in.
The tires screech as I speed down the alley and turn right, slowing down to not look suspicious once we don’t have the cameras on us anymore.
