“What happened?” My heart is beating so quickly I can barely take a breath. The mask narrows my vision and I shake my head. “Can I take this thing off?”

“No!” three voices shout back at me.

I guess that’s a no, then.

“I’m going to kill you, Elliot,” Kay hisses in the passenger seat. “I’m going to cut your balls off and feed them to you. I swear to fucking God…you fuckingasshole!”

“I’m sorry, okay?” He kicks Kay’s seat. “I told you this was too hard. Itold youwe should look at another plan.”

“We didn’t have time!”

“We had three months,” he fights back. “We had all the time in the world.”

It’s exactly 9:30 when I take a right onto the main street, right where the entrance to the bank is.

I catch a woman running out of the building, wearing a blouse and a pencil skirt, the side of her head bleeding. She stops on the steps that lead to the bank, on the phone. She looks at our van and our eyes cross.

Time slows down, I catch the panic in her eyes. She can’t see my face, but I feel like she can see my soul.

“They’re right here! Escaping in a white van. It’s a blank plate!”

“Elliot.” I hesitate to ask because I now think I know exactly what happened.

“She called the cops, Elliot.” Kay’s not screaming or panicked anymore. She’s running the pad of her thumb against the material of her balaclava, exactly where her lower lip is.

“I hope you’re ready to show us how well you can race, Jade. Because all our lives depend on you right now.”

“I’m sorry, Jade.” Elliot puts a hand on my shoulder from the back as I stop at a red light. “I’m sorry we lied to you about stealing the money. Please, forgive me. Forgive us.”

I turn my head, looking at his hand on me.

“What happened?”

“I couldn’t do it,” he whispers. A secret everybody knows, but he now admits to me. “I couldn’t kiss her. I just…I couldn’t do it. I fucked up, and I’m sorry.”

I don’t know if he says he fucked up because he knew I hadn’t stolen the fifty grand all along, or because he didn’t keep Natasha distracted.

“I’m selfish, Elliot,” I admit.

The sound of sirens resonates down the main street.

“Jade,” Kay calls out. “Now would be a really good time to go.”

“The light is red,” I tell her before talking to Elliot again. “I’m selfish, and I’m glad that she didn’t get to touch you like I do.”

“Jade,” Kay insists. “I can see them in our rearview mirror. I don’t fucking care about the lights, there are two cop cars coming our way.”

“I know.” I take a deep breath, my hands tightening on the steering wheel. “But forgiving you for the lie?” I tell Elliot. “I don’t think I can. Either of you.”

“I don’t fucking care about your love life right now. Get us out of here.” Kay’s eyes stay on the side mirror, and mine on the rearview.

“They’re almost here…they’re slowing down.”

“I know,” I insist.

One car slams on their brakes, stopping right behind us as the second keeps going to our side.

“Jade,” Ethan says slowly. “I know you’re mad…”
