“I’m not. Please, everyone, stop saying that. I’m not brave. I just didn’t have a choice.”

If I wanted to keep going, I had to play with the cards I was dealt. And mine happened to be theno one will believe youcard.

Theyou’re on your owncard.

Thepick yourself up and kill your assailantcard. Because no one will do it for you.

“I wish I could make it right.”

I put a hand on her thigh, the same way she did earlier. “There’s nothing for you to do. Especially now that I know you weren’t aware of it.”

She nods.

“It’s done,” I whisper, relaxing against the seat. “It’s all done.”

Something inside me feels so much better knowing that Kay didn’t think I was a liar. That she didn’t get a chance to believe me or not. That she really was there for me all the times she helped.

Until that day, I saw her as a big sister. She gave me lunch money when my dad couldn’t. Taught me how to fight. Paid for my mom’s treatment. And when she died, and I was away…she sorted her funeral even though she hated me.

We’re driving down the brothers’ street when I talk again. “So, about that place for me in the Kings?”

She smiles at me. “Elliot is a good right-hand, but sometimes his girlfriend makes him lose his mind.”

I can’t help a laugh. “Are you firing him because of me?”

“I’m offering you to do it with him. Someone needs to keep him in check.”

“Okay.” It’s hard to keep my mouth straight, and before I know, I’m grinning. “Okay, that sounds good.”

The giddiness of everything that just happened starts to take over. We’re home, and all we have to do is bring the bags inside. Then it’s a new start for all of us.

She parks, turns to me, and offers me her hand. “Welcome back to the Kings, Jade. Anything you need, I got you.”

I shake it, a shiver of happiness running down my back.

She opens her door, then turns to me again. “Oh, and Jade?”

“Yeah?”

“Anyone who did you wrong in this crew, I want their names. They don’t deserve to be one of us. They don’t deserve to be alive.”

I nod, tears coming to my eyes and swallowing back down. I’m about to be Kay’s right-hand. I can’t fucking cry in front of her.

For so long, I thought I’d lost my family. That none of them had my back. It feels good to belong again.

“I can’t wait to tell Elliot and Ethan I love them.”

She chuckles, messing my hair. “Let’s go then.”

We take two bags each and enter the house. I’m the first one to get inside, throwing the bags to the side, and going straight for the kitchen.

Behind me, I hear Elliot, Ethan, and Kay walking into the living room, and talking to each other.

“We’re taking the first bags to the basement,” Kay shouts my way.

“Okay, just getting a drink, and I’ll head back to the car for the rest,” I throw back from the kitchen.

I pour myself a glass of water. My throat is dry from today’s anxiety.
