“Emma!” Tamar shouts. She’s already retreating, clearly not used to the violence of it all.

She’s no fucking threat to me, and they should have kept her on a computer.

It all happens in mere seconds. I take Racer’s gun, shooting Logan in the shoulder to make sure he doesn’t die, but that he also won’t be a threat anymore.

Kay is up too. “Do me. Quick.” She presents me her tied wrists, and I cut her ties quickly.

She jumps over the sofa just as Emma runs back into the room, tackling her to the ground. “Bitch, I told you to kill me.” The whack of her fist against Emma’s face sounds disgusting.

Jade tries to get up as I cut Elliot’s ties. I can’t see her, but I can sense her standing.

“Sit back down,” I throw behind me.

She’s in more danger if she’s in the middle of this than if she stays low and quiet.

“E-Ethan…”

The way she calls out my name tells me something’s wrong.

Because I’ve heard it in every way imaginable. She’s giggled it, shouted it, moaned it.

But she never said it with such fear in her voice.

Elliot and I both turn around.

Kay and Emma stop too.

Everything stands still as we watch Tamar’s shaking hands holding the gun toward Jade’s chest.

They’re three steps apart. Maybe four.

Jade’s hands are still tied behind her back, but she doesn’t shake. Her fear is all in her eyes.

She eyes me and Elliot, silently pleading with us to do something.

“Tamar,” I say softly. “Lower your gun.” I squat and put mine to the floor, showing that I’m no threat to her.

“It’s okay, my love,” Elliot tells Jade. “They’ve got the bags. They’ve got everything.” Then he turns to Tamar. “You’re going to leave now.” It’s a plea more than an order, and it feels awfully strange coming from him.

Tamar nods. She’s crying, clearly going through something we don’t understand.

“Let’s leave,” she tells Emma. “Please, let’s just go.”

Emma is up, pushing Kay to the side. She helps Logan up, and both of them shake Racer awake.

It takes them less than a minute to be by the door. No one wants this to get any worse.

“Now put the gun away,” I tell her, both my palms extended toward her. “Just leave.”

She swallows thickly and shakes her head.

When she talks, her voice is barely above a whisper, choking on her tears.

“Did you like my notes, Jade?”

Jade’s brows furrow. “You?”

“Yes.” Tamar nods, her hands trembling some more. “Me. I saw you leave Racer’s garage the day you came back to town. I was driving in as you drove away.”
