“Sawyertoldus you did. He might have been a coward, but at least he stopped lying when he knew he was close to dying. Why don’t you learn to do the same? Because I swear to God, Jade, I will hurt you. This”—she points at Jade’s wound—“is nothing. Don’t fucking try me.”

“Sawyer said I helped him steal money?”

“You helped him on some jobs, didn’t you?” Kay asks.

“Yes, but—”

“I went away when my dad died to protect my daughters, and you two became real close, didn’t you?”

Kayla and Caden’s dad died in a fire NSC started in home. Kayla’s toddlers almost died too. They would have if Caden hadn’t gotten them out of the house in time. After that, Kayla, who should have taken over the Kings’ crew right away, had to leave town. She wanted her daughters away from the danger and brought them to her mom.

The whole time she was away, Sawyer assumed it was his right to be at the head of the Kings. Of course, Jade, in her eagerness to get to the top, sat on his dick the moment Sawyer took the power. But he was stupid, didn’t think before he acted. His pride made him volatile in the war against NSC. Mainly, none of us knew he was stealing from the Kings to set himself up for life.

Jade hesitates. “We became close, but—"

“And you listened to whatever shit he said. You did his bidding, sucked his dick whenever he asked, spread your legs for him.Didn’t. You?”

“Kayla, I didn’t know—”

“You helped him pick up the money from Elliot’s card cloning.”

“I did, but we brought it back!”

“Oh, really? Where’s the missing half, then? Thirty grand, to be precise.”

“What?” Jade chokes. She coughs, spitting blood on the floor. “We brought it back to Sawyer’s house.”

“It’snot. There.”

“But…”

“What about when you set up Billie, huh?”

Billie Scott used to do jobs for Caden. He didn’t give her much of a choice. She moved guns for him and brought the money to us. Jade and Sawyer stole the money out of her car once, setting up Billie to believe it had been robbed by randoms. When she came to Sawyer’s house to tell him, they beat her up. Sawyer wanted to do worse, but Jade stopped him.

“I set up Billie because she’s NSC!” Jade defends. “Caden is one of us, and he was dating someone from our rival gang. You hate her too. I might have hurt her, but I didn’t take the money that night.”

“Yes, you did.” Kayla’s tone is much calmer than Jade’s terrified one. “You took the twenty grand and probably hid it in the same place you hid the scam money. You better fucking tell me where that is before I cut your tongue off and make you guide me there in silence with a gun at the back of your head.”

Ah, there’s the Kayla we all know. So deliciously savage.

“I don’t…” She looks around in utter panic. “I didn’t steal anything, and if Sawyer did, then he didn’t tell me about it.”

Pausing, she looks at Ivan, Kay, and finally me. She bites her lower lip, and I know that’s what she does when she doesn’t want people to see it tremble. When she doesn’t want us to know she’s about to burst into tears. God forbid someone saw an ounce of emotion apart from her anger.

“Why won’t any of you believe me?” she rasps. “Elliot…I promise I didn’t know anything about this.”

I look deep into her eyes, and I do something I’ll regret in the future.

But if it keeps her here, scared, at my mercy, then I don’t care.

I smile at her, knowing my next words are exactly what is going to be her downfall.

“If you didn’t know about the stolen money…then why would you run away?”

And the way her face falls tells me everything I need to know.

She’s hiding something else.
