JADE

MakeDamnSure - Taking Back Sunday

I would rather Kay beat me to death than answer Elliot’s question.

The day I ran, I thought I had a reason to.

Two years ago, I believed with all my might that Sawyer had told them my secret. The one he was blackmailing me with. The fucker had a good time making me do his bidding. He knew my secret for months, but only started using it against me when things got tough for him. When his hunger for power became starvation.

The bastard was good at tricking me into listening.

So when he got caught by Caden for what he and I did to Billie, I knew I was going down with him. When the brothers came to my house, saying Sawyer had spilled it all, I couldn’t stay.

But now I know what he said was absolute shit. Stealing money, my ass. Sawyer didn’t have a chance to spill myrealsecret, and it’s coming with me to my grave. Even if it’s earlier than I ever anticipated.

“Tell us, Jade,” Kay sneers. “Tell us why you ran away if not because you stole money from us.”

It’s not really a lie if you tell a half truth, is it?

Still holding the tissue to my nose, I bring a hand to my ribs. They’re going to bruise. I can barely fucking breathe right now.

“You know why I ran away. I set up Billie. I attacked her. I carved a fucking Kings’ crown on her neck like I did to many of our enemies before. Caden killed Sawyer for what we did. I was next on the list. That’swhy I ran. Not because I stole some fucking money. I don’t know where that is.”

They all look at me, not one of them believing my excuse. It’s so clear in their eyes.

The front door bursts open, but I’m not too surprised. Because when you speak of the fucking devil…Caden King shows his face.

Caden strides into the living room, his piercing green eyes on me, ready to annihilate.

“Like a fucking Christmas morning,” he purrs as he puts a hand at the back of his jeans.

My eyes round when he pulls out a switchblade and clicks it open. And that’s when I change my mind.

About everything I said until now.

About being strong.

About dying.

If I need Elliot to survive in this town. Fuck it. I’ll do it.

I take a step back, standing right next to Elliot.

Kayla is talking to her brother, busy telling him he has no right being here, and while they’re all focusing on that, I turn to Elliot.

“I’ll take it.”

He cocks an eyebrow at me, his smile already spreading.

“What’s that, baby?”

“I’ll take your fucking deal, Elliot,” I grit. “Now fucking do something about your psychopath of a best friend.”

“Jade.” Caden shows me his sadistic smile, ignoring his sister. “How wonderful to have you back on the North Shore.”

In two strides, he’s in front of me, but in one, Elliot stands in his way.
