Yet another clue. Back then, he would put an album on for everyone to hear, and then he’d pick up his headphones, plug them into his amp, and create magic.

“He hasn’t made music in months,” Elliot says to himself, but I’m here to witness it anyway.

Unlike Ethan, Elliot and I eat eggs and bacon like we’ve been starving for days.

I just hope there’re no regrets afterward. That I don’t feel sick from it.

I decide to not look at myself in the mirror when I brush my teeth, turning my back. I ignore the way my eyes are desperate to go to the reflection and find something wrong with me.

There’s a knock on the front door as I finish, and I walk back toward the main bit of the house in time to see Elliot open for Kay.

Shit.

She’s back already? It hasn’t even been twenty-four hours.

“Where is she?” is the first thing she says. There’s no avoiding her, so I make my way to the living room.

Her smirk makes me want to punch her in the face. “Nice bruises.” My cheek feels swollen from her hits, and the skin around my left eye feels tender. I wouldn’t be surprised if I have a nice black eye. I’m glad she can’t see my bruised ribs.

“I got a job for you.”

“Couldn’t tell me over the phone?” I snarl.

She throws a plastic bag at me, and I catch it, opening it as she talks. “Not unless you want to work for me in Elliot’s boxers.”

There’s a pair of jeans in there, a bottle of apple-scented shampoo, and a makeup pouch. I open it, finding eyeliner, some mascara, and red lipstick. There’re also some skincare products.

My eyebrows lift when I realize she remembers every single product I used to buy. The kind of stuff that’s expensive and that I still would spend my hard-earned money on because I wanted to bebeautiful. Because I never wanted anyone to make fun of me again.

She must see my surprise because she says, “Elliot sent me a list. So if you think I’m a weirdo for knowing your products by heart, he’s the weirdo.”

My gaze flicks to him, but he’s not ashamed in the slightest. He’s got a huge, proud smile on his face.

“That’s weird, Elliot,” I tell him.

“I don’t think it is.”

“Why do you know all that?”

He shrugs. “Call me obsessed.”

But I know that’s not true, because he was never obsessed with me. He just loved the things I let him do to my body.

I put the jeans on and look back at Kay. “What’s the job?”

Kay glances around. “Where’s Ethan?”

I don’t miss the surprise on Elliot’s face. “We’re about to go get Stephen—”

“Who’s Stephen?” I interject.

“None of your business.” Kay stays calm, but her words cut deep anyway. I’m not sure I needed the reminder that I’m not trusted in this crew anymore.

“I’ll go get Ethan.”

My eyes follow Elliot as he leaves the room because I can’t get myself to look at Kayla while being alone with her. She sits on their sofa, and I walk to Ethan’s chair, the one he keeps by the window.

“You know why he always sits there?” my old boss asks.
