I keep my eyes on the road in front of the window, making sure I avoid her gaze. I can still feel her drilling holes into the side of my face.

Since I don’t answer, she carries on. “He told Caden that every day he looked to see if you came.”

“He knew I wasn’t coming back.” If only she knew I’m not the only one who can’t be trusted in her crew.

“Not while you were hiding from us,” she clarifies. “It was after he broke up with you in high school. He grabbed that armchair, faced it toward the window, and every day he watched if you came to his house to fuck his brother.”

I turn to her, narrowing my gaze. “You’re making it sound like I fucked him over. But I think you’re forgetting who broke up with who.”

Kay looks me up and down, unimpressed. “He made a mistake back then. You didn’t have to rub it in his face for months afterward.”

It’s exhausting having to justify myself constantly. I’ve had to spend my life proving I’m not a manipulative liar. Like the sky having to prove it’s meant to be blue on a rainy day. No one has the patience to wait and see. They only believe what’s right in front of them. Who cares about what’s behind a façade when you could just jump on a reason to hate someone.

Ethan used to say we’re a doomed race. He was right. We humans don’t deserve the place we hold on this planet.

“You know,” I say simply, my eyes going back to the road. The view shows exactly the side of the street I would come from, up to the doorstep. “There’s one person he never told he made a mistake. Me. He only hadangertoward me.” I close my eyes, tired of existing right now. “Like I deserved it.”

I open my eyes again when I hear footsteps approaching.

“So.” Elliot claps his hands. “Can you make this quick?”

My eyes are drawn to Ethan, standing right next to his brother. He is so beautiful in his own way. Everything about him makes my heart light on fire until it burns to ashes.

“I’ve got a job,” she says while still looking at me, doubt clouding her eyes. “It’s for the four of us. And if we get it right, Jade’s debt will be paid in full.”

“What?” My mouth drops open. Just like that?

I feel like I’m in one of those online videos, where someone just approaches you on the street to give you a thousand dollars. People look around, searching for the catch, for the trap. And I know it’s coming.

Ethan takes a blind step to sit in his armchair, his brow furrowing when he sees I’m sitting in it. I struggle to take my next breath. Everything in me is screaming to get up and apologize, but I consciously decide not to. Ethan will eat me alive if he senses weakness.

When I don’t give up my seat, he ignores me and turns to Kay instead.

How can he just ignore me after helping me in the bathroom yesterday?

“Us?” His voice is so different from any other man I know. Nothing too deep, a rasp and some higher notes than the usual male. Every time he opens his mouth, my pounding heart nears explosion.

“Yeah. The four of us.”

My pulse accelerates, a beat that makes me bite my lower lip and tap my fingers against the arms of the chair. There’s a mix of anticipation and fear bubbling in my belly.

Regardless of what this is, does it mean I get to leave faster or die sooner?

Whereas Ethan isn’t doing anything about where I’m sitting, Elliot doesn’t hesitate before grabbing my wrist and forcing me up. He takes two steps back, sits down, and pulls me onto his lap before wrapping a strong arm around my waist.

“Alright, I didn’t know you wanted to do this so quickly. But let’s do it. Share your plan with the room,” he says as Kay crosses her arms over her chest. He doesn’t need to speak any more for me to understand he’s well aware of her plan. She would have run it past her right-hand man before seriously organizing something big.

There’s a tight smile at the corner of Kay’s lips, and I know nothing good is about to come out of her mouth.

“We’re going to rob a bank.”

CODE MISTAKE – CORPSE, Bring Me The Horizon

“Do you think this is Ocean’s Eleven?” All heads turn to my way, but no one acknowledges me.
