“You’re a racer,” she says deadpan.

“Yeah, not a fuckingmagician.”

“Okay.” She chuckles to herself, takes a couple of steps back, and before I realize what she’s doing, she’s aiming a gun at my face.

“Kay,” Elliot barks at the same time he pushes me to the side and over the sofa. I land on the floor next to the sofa, and the gun ends up being pointed at him. “Put that shit away, will you?”

“This will be my last warning, Jade. Get on board with your new situation as the Kings’ little bitch, or you’re out. For good this time.”

I grab the arm of the sofa to stand back up, my heart beating furiously in my chest. “Fine. I’ll drive your fucking van.”

“Yeah, you will. We parked it in the brothers’ garage. I want you to show me something by the end of March. I want something fast.”

“You’re giving me barely over a month. That’s delusional.”

She doesn’t even deign me a response, talking to the two men instead. “Ethan.” Her voice is softer this time. “I need you to get on board. I need someone I can trust on this. All you’ll have to do is carry the bags. Elliot can run you through the exact plan.”

I can read Ethan like an open book. That’s what happens when you’ve shared so much with someone. The way he looks at his brother right now tells me he feels betrayed he hasn’t been made aware of this sooner.

Kay is already on the phone with someone else, heading for the door. Ethan is walking to his room, ignoring me. Elliot stands up, towering over me, too close for comfort. He puts a strand of wild curls behind my ear.

“Should I show you to your workshop for the next few months?” He keeps his hand in my hair, his dazzling eyes searching for something on my face.

I hope he can read the anger. That this job is fucked up and we could all die.

“I know where your garage is.” I shrug him off and storm off to the kitchen, slamming the door to the garage behind me.

Just like Kay promised, there’s a van here. A GMC Vandura that I’m assuming is supposed to be white but looks gray from the dirt and dust caked on it.

We look like we’re going to kidnap children with this. Or rob a bank.

The driver’s door squeaks when I open it to pop the hood. When I walk back to the front and lift the metal, my eyes practically bulge out of my head.

It’s a shitshow in here and she wants me to give her something that drives before the end of March?

I spend a few hours checking everything, dirtying Elliot’s shirt and trying to judge the kind of work I’m going to have to do.

When I’m done, I take the phone Kay got me and message her.

Jade: I need money to fix this shit van and tune it. At least ten grand.

Kay: Your problem.

“Fucking bitch,” I mutter.

I spend the rest of the day stripping the van of everything it doesn’t need. The lighter it is, the faster we’ll go. The engine stands no chance against anything, so I make sure to take that out too.

There’s only one way I know how to get money.

Race.

It takes me almost an hour to walk to my destination. I’m taking huge risks going into NSC territories.
