And it reopens right away, but it’s not Maria this time. It’s Elliot carrying a shaking Jade. Acrying, shaking Jade. And if there’s one thing the beauty never does, it’s show her tears to the world. Her legs are wrapped around his waist, and her arms around his neck.

“What the fuck?” I’m up and on them before he can step farther into the house. “What did you do, Elliot?”

“Nothing,” he grits out. “Get the fuck out of the way.”

“It’s the second time you bring her back into this house in a state. I think it’s time you admit she doesn’t fucking want you.”

“Don’t make me kick your ass, Ethan.” But I keep walking alongside him.

I bring my hand to Jade, caressing her trembling back. “Mi Cielo, what did he do?”

“I didn’t do shit.”

He’s angry. Probably because this is his fault.

Everything is always his fault. I might be the careless killer, but being the mastermind is so much worse.

“Ethan…” Jade’s rasp makes my heartbeat accelerate.

“I’m here.” I put more pressure on her back, giving her as much reassurance as I can.

Elliot is about to cross the threshold of his bedroom when she cries out, “I want Ethan.”

Time stands still for a second.

I can hardly believe it, my brain unable to process her words. It’s my heart that understands. It beats wildly for her.

Elliot is frozen on the spot.

“My love,” he pleads softly. “I’m sorry…I’m sorry, please, don’t go to him.” The deep desperation in his voice is only a fraction of how hurt he is. Elliot has gone through everything to make Jade his. He broke every rule, went to hell and back.

Butshedoesn’t know that.

She shakes her head, sniffling as she looks up. Her jade eyes cross with mine. They’re borderline gray when she cries. The green is drowned in her sorrow.

“I want Ethan,” she repeats without looking away, entirely unashamed of her need for me.

“I want Ethan.”

I nod frantically. “Let her go,” I order Elliot.

I grab her waist, and she hooks her arms around my neck. But he won’t let go of her hips, his arms wrapped around her and forcing her to keep her legs around him.

“Jade, please.” For a fraction of a second, I feel bad for him.

Because no matter how hard he tries, he will never understand what Jade and I share.

No matter the timeline, the galaxy, the fucking dimension, Jade and I are meant to be.

“Let me go,” she whimpers, burying her face in the crook of my neck.

His gesture is the most reluctant act I’ve seen in a long time. His hands go to his blond hair, gripping the roots.
