I narrow my eyes at my boss, and she snorts, bringing the phone to her ear again. When she closes the front door behind her, Maria turns to me, a salacious smile playing on her lips.

“So, how old are you turning, Ethan?”

It takes all of me not to throw my head back and huff. Couldn’t she just leave with Kay? What the hell does she think is going to happen?

“Twenty-one,” I mumble. Looking around the room while I think of any excuse to make her leave.

“Fuck,” she laughs. “I think my friends are right. I like them young.”

Now that doesn’t sound creepy as fuck. And people sayI’mweird.

“How old do you think I am?” She winks at me, clearly hoping for me to say something much lower than her actual age.

She’s the type of person who refuses to age. She’s probably between thirty-five and forty, which is fine, really, but I’m not into her. I’m into Jade.

When I take too long to answer, she laughs again. “You don’t want to take a wild guess in case you offend me. I get it.” She settles more comfortably on the sofa.

“So, twenty-one, and how long have you been part of the Kings?”

“Four years.” Are my answers not unenthusiastic enough for her to get the hint?

“That’s a long time torturing people for Kay.”

People just pry and pry…

“Kay wasn’t the leader back then. Her dad was. Then Sawyer. Now her.”

“Gotcha. Still, four years of what you do…”

She puts her hand on my chest. The feeling makes me want to scream, to claw at my own skin. I want to break every single one of her fingers.

I don’t think she understands the many ways in which I’m already thinking I could cut her body up. Limb by limb, until she has nothing left to touch me with.

People look for something until they find exactly what they want. Something they will love, or a sign to finally. Fucking. Drop it.

“I don’t mind,” I admit, eventually at ease with the topic. “Torturing, killing, chopping up body parts. I finally found a healthy, useful way to do it.”

Her hand is quick to leave my body. Fuck, I thought I was actually going to have to knock her unconscious.

“Before that, thatwas when it was bad. Leaving body trails all over town. Having to kill people to feed my need for blood. They were people who had pissed me off, but did they really deserve to die? I don’t know.”

I lean forward, smiling at her when her face falls. “There’s nothing like the silence of a heart that stops beating, and how aware you are that yours still is.”

She shifts away from me delicately, like she’s terrified I’m going to grab her and pull her heart out of her chest. “And you, Maria. What doyoulike to do for fun?”

She opens and closes her mouth a few times before finally saying, “I-I should go.”

“Yeah, sure. Whatever you need to do.”

But she’s already up, bag in hand and by the door.

“So I’ll see you for my birthday?” I shout at her retreating back.

“I’m busy next Friday!”

Slam!

That was our front door.
