“Well, fuck me. Talk about being knocked for six by a blast from the past.” Matteo lets out a low whistle. Everyone at the table turns to him. No one asks but the question is there, thick in the air. “That was Kathryn Kilgor. Come on, you didn’t recognize her?”

“Who the fuck is Kathryn Kilgor?” the Valentino twins ask at the same time.

“You two are too young to remember, but back in college, Gray was obsessed with the girl, barely let her out of his sight. When she disappeared, I assumed he offed her because it was like she never existed. He flipped a switch and, poof, it was likeKathryn who?”

“I remember her,” Theo says.

Luke and I share a look before we both get up and walk in the direction Gray stormed off towards. I might not know the guy that well yet, but we are friends—well, if you look past his obvious hatred for me right now, that is.

“Hold up. Let me get Aliyah,” I tell Luke.

“You get that Monroe. I’ll go find the other one and make sure he doesn’t do something stupid.”

I nod and we part ways. It only takes me a second to find Aliyah on the dance floor. It’s not hard. She’s the fucking hottest chick here. She’s like a beacon. Everyone with a dick is watching her sway those hips. I walk up behind her, wrapping an arm around the front of her body, across her shoulders, and I pull her into me.

“We need to go. Something is off with your brother,” I tell her.

Aliyah spins around in my arms and looks up at me. “He just found out his teammate is screwing his little sister. I think he’s going to need time, Liam,” she says, locking her hands around the back of my neck.

Her body doesn’t stop moving. My palms slide down, stopping at the curve of her ass. “No, it’s something else. He was asking about the girl from that little league stunt we did. The kid and her mother.”

“Huh, I thought I recognized the mother from somewhere but I couldn’t remember where,” she says.

“Someone mentioned the name Kathryn,” I tell her, and her eyes widen with recognition.

“Oh, shit. This isn’t good. Come on, we gotta go. Why didn’t you say we had to go?” she asks.

“Pretty sure that’s what I started with.”

“Yeah, but I thought that was just your way of trying to get me into your bed.”

“There’s never a second that I’m not thinking of ways to get you back into my bed, princess.” I thread my fingers with hers, waiting for her to say goodbye to her friend, and then I lead her out of the club.

ChapterThirty-One

Iwas young but I remember Gray bringing Kathryn home for the holidays one year. It’s the only time he’s ever brought a girl over to meet the family, and the only time we ever saw her. Then, like many uncomfortable topics in my household, she was never spoken of again.

I don’t know what is going on with Gray, or why he’s asking about her and her daughter now—although there’s also this feeling in the pit of my stomach that tells me I do know. I just really hope for everyone’s sake, especially Kathryn’s, that what I’m thinking isn’t true. The timeline makes sense, but I really don’t think Gray would handle that kind of betrayal from anyone.

When we get back to the hotel, I head straight to my brother’s suite. “Let me talk to him. I’ll meet you in your room when I’m done,” I tell Liam.

“Are you sure?” He looks to the door.

“Liam, he’s my brother. He’s not going to do anything to me,” I say.

“Okay, yeah. Call me if you need anything.” He leans down and briefly kisses me.

I pull back, wait for Liam to walk away, and knock on my brother’s door. “Gray, open up,” I yell out. He might not open up to many people when he’s in a mood, but I know my brother, and he’s nevernotgoing to open his door for me.

Sure enough, a few seconds later, the door swings open and Gray sticks his head out, looking up and down the hallways. “Did the neanderthal actually let you out of his grasp?” he asks me.

“Shut up, and don’t call him that. He’s your friend,” I remind my brother, walking past his bulky frame to get into his room.

“No, he’s not. A friend wouldn’t bang my sister behind my back.”

“Would you rather he do it in front of you? Actually, don’t answer that. That came out wrong.” I shake my head. “It doesn’t matter. I’m not here to talk about Liam.”

“Are you okay? What’s wrong?”
