“I don’t like blood, and I don’t like blades. But mostly I don’t like seeing you get hurt. I know it’s your job and you love it, but I feel every hit, every body-check. Not physically obviously. But when you hurt, I hurt,” she says.

“So I guess that means you kinda like me, then, huh?”

She slaps a hand against my chest. “Well, you’re so insistent that you’re my boyfriend and all, I figure I should learn to like you. Some would call itStockholm.”

“Do you remember the first day we met?” I ask her.

“How could I forget? You came running out of the shower naked.”

“You enjoyed the show.”

“You killed a spider with a hockey stick while you were naked. It was hilarious.”

“I was shit scared of that damned spider. I killed it for you, because when I looked at you and saw the fear in your eyes, I wanted to erase it. It forced me to face my own fears.”

“I know. Your hands were shaking.”

“Spiders are fucked-up creatures. I don’t like 'em.” I run my hand up and down her arm. “The point is, whatever your fears are, I want to conquer them with you.”

“Or… I can just go on about my life ignoring and avoiding them?” she says.

“There is that too,” I say. “Did you have fun with your friends tonight?” I ask, changing the subject.

“They want to have dinner.”

“Okay.”

“With you,” she clarifies.

“Okay, and you don’t want to?”

“I don’t want them to grill you, which I know they will.”

I laugh. “Babe, I survived your father and all three of your brothers. I think I can handle your friends. Arrange the dinner.”

“I will, but don’t say I didn’t warn you,” she huffs.

ChapterThirty-Three

Liam pulls into the lot at the Castle. I’ve been so busy texting back and forth with the girls—mostly threatening them with bodily harm if they embarrass me tonight at the dinner we’ve planned for them to officially meet Liam—I didn’t notice where he was headed.

“Why are you here?” I ask him.

“Come on,” he says, shutting off the engine and getting out of the car.

“Liam, the stadium’s not even open. No one’s here,” I say, unfastening my seat belt and following him anyway.

Liam holds up a set of keys. “Just so happens I have the keys tothe castle, princess.”

“How’d you get those?”

“Aliyah, I’m King. The King. Why wouldn’t I have keys?” he deadpans.

I can’t help but laugh at his corniness. “I’m set to inherit thiscastleand I don’t even have keys,” I remind him.

“Maybe I’m just on better terms with the owner than you are.”

“Doubtful.” I smile.
