She flicked open her eyes to find herself in complete darkness and her body still in water. Only, she wasn’t in the tub—she sank below the surface of cold, dark water, falling deeper into a blackened oblivion. Heart hammering, she thrashed her arms and swam upward.

“Hello!” Aura gasped, spitting out brackish water when she broke through the barrier. “Sorcha! Are you here?”

“I’m here,” the princess whispered so close that it sounded as if she were floating a hair’s breadth above her.

Aura passed her arm through the air and connected with nothing solid. “I can’t feel you, and I can’t see a thing.”

“Neither can I,” Sorcha said, her teeth chattering.

“Before we finish where we left off, this is important. Do you know where Rush keeps the key to the cellar? I want to see if your journal is there and to possibly find a way to break my curse.”

Sorcha blew out a breath. “Rush will hate me, but I do owe you, Aura. You can’t continue to meet me in these dreams. Father always kept it in between the pages of his book on piano keys in the library of my parents’ bedroom. The book is located on the first shelf, third row from the bottom. Once the room and library were Rush’s, the key remained there. He might still keep it in that location, but I’m not certain. There’s something else I need to speak to you about. So much more you must hear. I remember you from when I was alive, and I want to tell you I’m sorry, so very sorry. I was a fool. When he—”

Before she could hear the rest of Sorcha’s words, Aura was yanked below the water. Fingers didn’t crawl up her ankles, and hands didn’t grasp her flesh—it was the water itself. She writhed and twisted, whipping her arms forward to break the surface. Yet she remained in the same position, the water trapping her there, preventing her from moving anywhere.

Aura’s lungs pleaded for air as they clenched, but then that abrupt pain struck her digit, driving up her arm to her heart before she jolted forward, her eyes flying open. No longer was she residing in watery darkness but in the bath, the liquid now cold and brown from washing herself.

Sorcha remembered her… But Aura didn’t remember her, only hearing about the princess briefly when she’d died. It made sense that she knew who Aura was though… Sorcha would’ve known Aura was betrothed to Pax since Rush had been friends with him. A lot of people had heard Aura’s name even if they’d never met. For now, she needed to focus on the information she received. The key, if Rush kept it in the same place still, was in his personal library. And tonight she would find a way to get in there.

A black silk robe atop a fluffy towel rested on the chair beside the bathtub. Aura quickly dried her body, then slipped on the robe. As soon as she went out into the hallway to get dressed inside her room, footsteps echoed. Footsteps she recognized. She remained where she was and watched as Rush entered the corridor. His molten gaze met hers, and his lips curled up at the edges. He didn’t stop at his door—no, he sauntered toward her, ignoring the two guards as they bowed their heads.

Aura’s traitorous body heated at the way he was looking at her. She awaited him, his touch, the way to get that key. Rush backed her into the wall, then snaked an arm around her waist and lifted her chin with his callused fingertips. “How was your time in the gardens, kitten?” he drawled.

“Lovely,” she said, her voice breathy.

“So, you got dirty?”

“Very.”

He ran a hand through her hair and purred, “You’re wet.” The King of Sin’s fingers trailed down her neck, her collarbone, between the valley of her breasts, to her mound. The place where she needed his touch the most. “How about here?”

“Verymuch so. You can see for yourself if you wish.”

A deep growl escaped Rush’s throat and he drew open her robe, her nipples pebbling at the cool air. His gaze swept up her body, a ravenous hunger shining there. He leaned in and whispered in her ear, “Do you want me to fuck you right here in front of the guards?”

She shook her head, and even though thoughts of the key vanished the more he touched her, she managed to get out, “Your bed.”

Rush stilled, seeming to mull something over before he hoisted her up, pulling a yelp from her. He held her against his chest as he carried her into his room. Night shone through the slit in the curtain concealing his balcony doors, and a lit lantern illuminated his desk.

“You don’t have to always carry me.” Aura grinned. And she hated to admit it, but shelikedit, liked the way his strong arms felt around her.

“Of course not—I’m the king. But I want to.” Rush set her on her feet in front of the bed. His fingers brushed the edges of her robe, and she arched forward. He slowly pushed back the fabric, letting the robe pool on the floor. His eyes grew hooded as he raked her over. “Fuck, kitten, I need to be inside you.” And then his lips were on hers, gentle in a way she never expected from him. His tongue slipped between her lips, deliciously massaging hers. They only broke the kiss so she could lift his shirt over his head.

As their mouths locked once more, she stroked him over his trousers before unfastening the button. He shoved the fabric down and entangled his hands in her hair as he kissed her with furor. The way he kissed, the way he touched, she wanted every moment of it.

Aura grasped his thick length and he groaned, low and guttural, while she stroked him thoroughly.

“Enough,” Rush commanded, then lifted and brought her into his lap as he sat on the bed. Her bare flesh was pressed to his hard cock, her body yearning for more. She moaned when he gripped her hips, urging her to move atop him. She’d never wanted Pax like this, so desperately, so needy, soraw.

When Rush’s hot mouth closed around her taut nipple, circling it with his tongue, she couldn’t handle it anymore. “Take me. Make me yours.” It was meant to be a lie—however, it tasted of truth. If the King of Sin kept doing what he was, she would be forever his, regardless if she was bound to his home or not.

“You’re already mine,” Rush purred, nipping her lower lip, then rolling them so her back hit the mattress. “Even though this is your first time, I promise you this—you’ll fucking come.”

Aura’s eyes widened, anticipation stirring in her lower belly while he ventured down her body until his alluring face was at her center. His wicked eyes never left hers as he ran his tongue ever so slowly up her core, teasing her before trailing heated kisses up her stomach to her breast.

Circling her clit with his deft fingers, Rush’s lips found her neck. He kissed and sucked, and she craned her neck further to give him more access. His length replaced his hand, brushing her soaked entrance. Biting her lip, she arched back with a loud gasp as he buried himself inside her. The ache stung and she opened her mouth to curse him, but then his hips gingerly moved, and another feeling blossomed there. Small at first, a closed flower bud opening a bit of bliss with each roll of his hips.

“Claw me all you want, kitten,” he said in a gruff voice. “I don’t give a fuck how much damage you do to me.”
