In answer, Aura gripped his hair as he continued his delicious pace, as the friction picked up, harder andharder. Her hands skimmed down his back, holding onto him. There wasn’t an ounce of nervousness or discomfort within her at having him be the one to take something she’d saved her whole life to give to someone else.

Rush lifted one of her legs over his shoulder, bringing himself in deeper, hitting her bud over and over again. Building and building. Until a small flame flickered, growing and pulsing within her before it fully ignited, euphoria rolling through her, unleashing inside her veins.

“Rush!” she screamed, yanking on his hair once more as her body vibrated in gratification.

“I like hearing you scream.” He smirked and slipped out of her. “Now, grip the headboard.”

Catching her breath, she nodded and turned, kneeling, to grasp it. He was only gone a moment before he thrust into her from behind. Another moan slipped out of her. Especially when his hands were on her breasts, kneading, then trailing one between her legs. Her eyes fluttered as he moved inside her and a second bout of ecstasy graced her. Rush released a roar at her back, his body quaking against hers when he came.

“Fuck,” he rasped, then echoed it again, “Fuck.” He didn’t pull out of her and toss her aside as she expected. Instead, he remained above her, his arms circling her for a few more moments before he brought her with him to lay on the bed. “Damn, kitten. The next time, let me see what else you can do with those claws of yours.”

Aura’s chest heaved as she rested her head against his chest. The next time… Would there be one if she found the key tonight? She didn’t know. But what shedidknow was she wanted him to pleasure her more times than the number of stars filling the sky.

As the silence stretched between them, she finally broke it by asking, “So … how come you’ve never had anyone in your bed? Curiosity has gotten the best of me.”

Rush glanced down at her, his lips pursed. “It never felt right to bring anyone here. The royal bedchamber is meant for a king and his queen, not for conquests.”

“But I’m not your queen,” she stuttered, wondering why he would choose to allow her in his bed then.

“No.” He furrowed his brow, seemingly lost in thought.

“What will you offer her then?” she asked. Envy churned within her chest and she swatted it away.

“I have nothing left to give.”

“I think you have plenty. Perhaps you can tell her your secrets. Be honest, truthful.”

“Truthful?” His silver eyes studied her face, thoughts swirling in their depths.

“Yes! It’s what people should do when they care about someone.”

“Oh, kitten, how facetious of you to think I would care about anyone.” His face then softened, or, perhaps, she imagined it. “Honestly,I hated you when I shouldn’t have. I’ve treated you dishonorably by stealing you away and forcing you to stay. You’re not what I expected, and things … haven’t gone as planned.” Before she could think on what he said, Rush changed the subject, speaking in a low voice, “Tell me what you would do to see your sisters again.”

Her eyes widened in surprise at his question, wondering why he would ask such a thing. Or was he thinking about Sorcha in that moment? But she mulled over his question, truly thought about what she would do for that chance. “As long as they’re safe, even if I never see them again, I have comfort in that.”

“My sister would’ve liked you.” Rush smiled then. “She got along with everyone, but the two of you would’ve been friends. Even though she…” he trailed off. “Did you find working in the gardens pleasing?”

Aura’s chest tightened, but she went along with another change in matters. “Perhaps tomorrow you can come out there and getyourhands dirty with me and find out.”

He arched a brow and smirked. “I’ll watch.”

Aura laughed softly, then went into the importance of the types of soils that she learned from Farah until Rush’s eyelids fluttered. She lulled her tone to make it softer, more soothing, waiting for his breaths to come out deep and steady.

When she was certain Rush was asleep, Aura lifted off him and froze as he rolled to face her, his lids still closed. With one fragile movement after another, she slipped from the bed before she put on her robe. Aura tiptoed to the library door, taking the lantern from his desk, and carefully drew it open. She shut the door behind her, then hurried over to the first bookshelf. Hunching over, she skimmed her fingers across the books until she found the title she was looking for:A World of Piano Keys.

Aura held her breath as she opened the large tome, the light scent of vanilla from the old pages caressing her senses. Her heart raced when she flipped through the pages, thinking she wouldn’t find what she was looking for, until finally, near the center, there it was. The key, gold and slender. As quickly and quietly as she could, she put the book back on the shelf.

Praying to the gods that Rush wasn’t awake, she placed the key into her robe pocket and snuck into the bedroom to his heavy breaths echoing off the walls.Thank the gods.

Aura placed the lantern back on his desk, then neared the bed when Rush rose on his elbows, patting the mattress in search of her. She halted, her hands coming to the tie of her robe. “I’m over here,” she said, managing to keep her voice even.

“And where do you think you’re sneaking off to, kitten?” he asked in a groggy voice.

“But for a dessert, of course.” She paused. “I’ll be back in a bit.”

“Mmm,” he purred. “Bring me back something sweet, and I’ll give you something even more sweet in return.”

“I can’t deny that trade.” Aura smiled, guilt crawling through her and her hand shaking as she took the lantern from his desk before leaving the room.
