“It hurt so much knowing I could never have you. When you said you weren’t in love with me, it jus—”

“I didn’t mean it. I lied to you because I didn’t want to admit the truth. I can never love another woman the way I love you, Aria. I hope you realize that. You’ve ruined me.”

Holding his gaze, I lightly traced his eyebrows. “I haven’t ruined you. I want to love you forever.”

“Promise me you’ll pull the plug on my respirator if that day should ever come.”

I rolled my eyes. “Don’t be so morbid, please.”

“At least promise me you won’t get mad when I off myself once I’m old and dependent on Medicare.”

“Quit the crazy talk!”

“I don’t want to be a decrepit old man, sweetie. You’re young. You shouldn’t ever have to look after me and nurse me in my old age.”

“You’re only sixteen years older than me.”

“Onlysixteen?” Noah cringed. “Jeezuz, that’s ancient in my books.”

“It’s not that bad. You still have another thirty years to go before you hit sixty. We’ll both look after each other.” I took my time kissing him, hoping he’d cheer up.

“You have all this power over me, and it freaks me out. I’m not used to it. It’s terrifying.”

“I won’t abuse that power. You don’t have to worry.” I reassured him with a smile, massaging his shoulders.

Lowering his face to mine, he let our lips reunite in a tender kiss while thunder crashed in the distance.

“I wish I could stay in this moment with you.” Noah broke our kiss. “If I could freeze this memory and relive it forever, I would.”

“Why do you say that? I look forward to creating more amazing memories with you. You still have to take me to Italy this summer.”

Sadness suddenly seeped into his eyes.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” I said. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing.”

“It doesn’t look like ‘nothing.’ What’s on your mind, Noah?”

Panic filled my heart as our bedroom darkened. A freak storm was moving in, as if we had angered the gods by our lovemaking.

“Promise me you won’t forget about last night,” Noah said, looking anxious.

“What do you mean?”

“Promise me, Aria.”

How could I ever forget?

A loud lightning bolt crashed above us, startling me as the wind forced its way through the windows, whipping the curtains in the air.

What the hell is going on?

“Was there a hurricane warning overnight?” I asked as the rain pelted down. “We should probably close the—”

“We don’t have much longer, baby.”

Wanting to get up, Noah stopped me by trapping me beneath his buff body. He stroked my hair and stared right through me.
