“Not enough to guarantee a full recovery,” he replied. “A kidney transplant is the only solution.”

Andthatwas my cue to step in and reassure her that everything was going to be all right.

“Aria”—I held her hand—“Don’t worry. Your mother and I will get tested to see if we can donate.”

“Wait—Mom’s in LA?”

“Yes.”

“When did she fly here?”

“A day after the accident.” I had a feeling this was too much for her to take in at once. “Look,” I said. “It’s almost four o’clock. Your mom will be here soon, and you can catch up with her.” I was about to ask Rick something when I heard Evan’s voice down the hall. He wasn’t alone; Natalie was talking to him.

“I’ll be right back,” I said, stepping out of the room, only to regret it.

“What the hell are you two doing here?” I said, guarding the door while exchanging death glares at Evan and Rob. “Natalie, I thought I told you I don’t want them here.” I couldn’t mask my anger.

“Noah, calm down. Doctor Peters mentioned it was best to get as many organ donors as possible in the family to volunteer and get tested, remember?”

“And that piece of shit would like to offerhiskidney?” I was referring to that pathetic excuse for a husband she had. “Over my dead body!”

Rob leaned into Natalie’s ear and muttered, “I told you this was a bad idea.”

“Damn right it is!” I blasted.

“No.” She shook her head. “It’s not. Noah, please step aside. We came here to visit Aria, not argue with you.”

“You’re free to go inside, Natty. However, idiot oneandidiot twocan back off.”

“Easy, bro.” Evan glared.

Ignoring him, I cast my hostile gaze on Rob. “Mydaughter doesn’t need your kidney. It’s probably on the verge of failing from all that booze you’ve been chugging all your miserable life.”

“You’re one to talk!” Rob growled. “Coke head!”

“Get out of my face and leave this hospital before I put you in one of these beds myself!” I was ready to give him another black eye, but Evan stopped me.

“Noah, chill out!”

“Get your hands off me!”

I hadn’t been sleeping or eating well for weeks, which explained my cranky mood. We took a breather when Aria called out to us. I guess our bickering was pissing her off.

Natalie looked at me with pleading eyes. “Please,” she said, “for the sake of our daughter, keep the peace.”

“Fine.” I glowered at Rob one last time before entering the hospital room.

Evan embraced her first in cheerful spirits while I brooded in a corner. Natalie was next to shower her with affection. I hadto resist my violent urges when Rob kissed my daughter on the head.

Rick caught our attention and told us he’d return in an hour after finishing his rounds with other patients.

“Doctor Peters,” said Nat. “Before you go, I have to ask… when can we come in for testing?”

“We can schedule an appointment as early as tomorrow morning,” he replied.

“Wonderful.” She smiled.

I tried to bite my tongue but failed. “That excludesRobby.”
