Nat folded her arms in her chest and frowned at me. “No, it doesn’t,” she disputed. “He would like to donate a kidney to our daughter. And if he’s able to, then you should be grateful.”

I hated how quick she was to defend the jerk, despite everything that had happened.

“What’s going on?” said Aria, sitting up.

“Nothing, sweetheart,” Nat replied. “We’re all getting tested tomorrow to see if we’re a compatible match for your kidney transplant.”

“Rob wants to donate?”

“Yes,” he spoke up and cleared his throat before he sat in a chair beside her. “Aria, I wish I could take back all the horrible things I’ve said and done to hurt you.”

You can’t turn back the clock, asshole.

“I know I haven’t been a great father to you. I’ve had my own demons to slay. Life’s been so stressful. It’s no excuse…”

Damn right it isn’t.

“But I regret all the times I took my anger out on you and projected my inadequacy and shame.”

She will never forgive you, and neither will I,I condemned him in silence.

Aria gave him the blankest stare, as if she couldn’t believe what was coming out of his mouth. But that didn’t stop Rob from apologizing.

“Maybe in the smallest way,” he added, “I can make up for all the terrible things I’ve done by being an ideal candidate for you.”

“Wow!”—I gave him a slow applause—“Thatalmostpassed for a half decent performance. You had me going there for a moment, Robby boy. I must admit.” My blatant sarcasm couldn’t have been more obvious.

“Who are you calling aboy?” he grumbled. “I’m older than you. Sit down, Noah.”

“True.” I titled my head. “You look pretty damn prehistoric.”

“Noah!” Natalie shouted.

Rick seemed uncomfortable as he mentioned leaving to give us privacy.

“You’re staying,” I sternly stated, turning my focus back on fuckface. “When was the last time we saw each other, Robby?”

He stayed quiet.

“Well?”

“I’ll answer you once you learn how to say my name properly.”

“Oh, yeah!” I laughed. “Now I remember! I think it was at your apartment. Wait… weren’t you in really rough shape? What the hell happened to you that night?” I chuckled, shaking my head. “That’s right… I beat the shit out of you. Ah, good times! Would you like me to refresh your memory, Robby? Because I could—”

“All right,” Evan cut in. “Enough.”

“Will you stop doing that?” I glowered at him. “What are you, his bodyguard? Do you know what that SOB has done to my daughter?”

“Look, I know you have beef with each other, but you need to put your differences aside for Aria’s sake.”

My volatile temper stabilized when I met her gaze.

“You’ve been selfish,” Evan said. “Forbidding me from visiting her. She’s my niece, Noah. Her life is in danger, and I want to help.”

I stared at my brother long and hard before I said, “Look at you, acting all grown up for once.”

“You know I’m right, so stop being stubborn and let us help.”
