“I, um…”

The music was so loud we had to shout over each other.

“It’s a Friday night,” I said. “We wanted to party.” That was the best explanation I could come up with.

“I see.”

The room was suddenly spinning.

“Hey, don’t fall!” Jess grabbed my arm just in time, helping me regain my balance. Those Cherry Bombs were working faster than I had expected.

“Have you been drinking?” He suspiciously narrowed his eyes.

“No… it’s these shoes. I’ve been dancing in them all night.”

“Wait…” Jess spoke up. “IsthisEvan? As in… your Uncle Evan?”

I guess she couldn’t recognize him with the new haircut. The only time she’d seen him was when I had briefly pointed him out at the mall a while back.

“Yes, that would be me.” He smiled. “I didn’t realize I was that popular.”

“Is everyone in your family good looking?” Jess flirted.

“Pretty much.” I let out a laugh and felt my motor skills weaken as the alcohol worked its way into my bloodstream.

His date looked annoyed as she said, “Are we gonna dance or what?”

Evan leaned into her ear and murmured something while I watched her ruby lips curl into a grin. She handed him her cellphone, and he punched in his digits before he returned her device. I noticed the way she bit her lip and eyed himseductively, brushing her hand down his chest before walking away.

Awkward!

“Well… it was nice running into you!” I tried to wrap up the conversation as quickly as possible.

“Wait.” Evan grabbed my arm.

A jolt of electricity sparked through my nervous system. I wasn’t sure if it was because of his touch, or that I was heavily intoxicated.

“First off,” he began, “you’re drunk.”

“I’m not!”

“Second, you look upset. What happened?” There was genuine concern in those honey brown eyes.

“She’s fine,” Jess said. “Our friend was just being a mega bitch.”

“You don’t need to tell him!” I complained.

“You’re both underage. How’d you get in?” Evan switched glances from me to her while we stayed quiet.

“Please don’t call Noah,” I begged.

“Are you kidding me? He’d probably accuse me of bringing you here myself.”

And right you are.

“You should have passed on the alcohol. Anyone could have easily slipped something into your drink.” He gave me a worried look, then glanced at Jess and said, “Same toyou.”

“We bought all our drinks tonight and sat in the VIP section!” Jess beamed at him. I think she was more intoxicated than I was, though she held her liquor more gracefully than me.
