I had fallen in love with the California sun, but I also missed the crisp fall air of New York City… Leaves changing color, fall fashion; it was the perfect season to wear boots, scarves, and warm pea-coats. Hot chocolate and homemade stews werealso a favorite of mine during this time of year. It seemed like yesterday that I had fled from my big city life, but I could never take the city girl out of me.

CHAPTER FORTY-SIX

ARIA

I loved October rain, especially when I had to study. It was a Friday night and instead of going out, I was sitting in bed, listening to music and “partying” with piles of textbooks. My favorite track on Cary Brothers’Who You Arealbum was “Ride.” I listened to it all evening because it made me reminisce about the three-day road trip I took with Noah from LA to NYC. Driving with the top down, feeling the wind in my hair, Noah’s hand in mine… I was happy to be out on the open road after spending so many weeks in a dull hospital room. It was the first time I felt free to be with him minus the guilt. We stayed at a few hotels along the way, but we never made it past “first base” in the bedroom. I was still healing from a major surgery, so our sexual activities were limited to PG kissing and cuddling. Noah had more self-control than me, which was a good thing.

I had a paper to write on Friedrich Nietzsche and was about to begin my first body paragraph when I received a call. Noah’s picture popped up on my screen and I instantly smiled. I was about to answer the call, but stopped when I realized I looked a bit disheveled. Brushing on some gloss, I got comfortable as I lay on my stomach and accepted his call on my laptop.

“Finally!” Noah beamed. “Took you long enough.”

I blushed when I saw his handsome face.

“I was thinking you were trying to kick out a boy from your room.” Noah chuckled.

“You’re the one who looks like you have a serious case of sex hair going on. Dare I questionyourfidelity?” I teased.

“I always have sex hair going on, according to you.”

That was true. His hair was just so thick and beautiful. The thought of running my fingers through it made me…

“You look gorgeous,” he added.

“Are you kidding? Every time you see me, I resemble death more and more. Behold, yourCorpse Bride.”

He smiled, and I melted.

“I know you love Tim Burton films,” Noah said, “but you’re nothing close to the living dead. You just need to sleep on time, baby.”

“Tell that to my professors who keep piling on the workload,” I sighed, swinging my legs back and forth while I gazed at him.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Like what? Am I not allowed to admire your hotness?”

“You’re not admiring. You’re studying me—suspiciously. Do I really need to show you there’s no one under my desk?”

“Actually, I was just wondering if you’ve got a ‘Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ going on.”

“Is that the movie where Brad Pitt ages backwards?”

“Well, Brad doesn’t—but his character does.” I giggled.

“Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m only getting older. And come to think of it”—he paused—“I’m not sure what would be worse: having you take care of a baby version of me, or having you care for me while I’m cranky and stuck in a wheelchair—in a diaper.”

“Oh, my God!” I laughed.

Noah grinned, folding his hands behind his head. It was hard not to stare at his bulging biceps.

He really needs to take off that shirt.

“Well, at least I got you laughing,” he said.

“You know I love you no matter what, Noah.”

“You’re determined to blind yourself to my flaws.”

“I know you’re not perfect, but your imperfections make you perfect for me.”
