“Okay, I’m here.”

“There’s an oil painting mounted on the wall behind my desk. Do you see it?”

I switched on the light. “Yep!”

“Behind it you’ll find a safe. The passcode is: 18-6-39-75. Punch in the digits and open it. There’s a silver key in a black box.”

“Okay… I’ve got the key. Now what?”

“Go to my desk and unlock the first drawer on the right—you’ll find a bunch of files. Look for the one that has the label:Jung vs. Matthews.I need you to fax it over to me. Do you know how to work a fax machine?”

“Uh…”

I did not want to screw this up.

“Look,” Noah said. “Don’t panic. I’ll walk you through it.” He seemed much calmer than I was.

When I opened the drawer, I froze. There were no files inside… nothing. The only thing I found was a long stem rose—a red one.

“Did you find the file?” he asked.

“Um… no.”

“What do you mean ‘no’?”

“I found a rose in the drawer, not a file.” I grabbed it and closed my eyes, smelling its intoxicating scent.

“Hmm, that’s odd,” Noah said.

Music suddenly echoed all around me; it had a progressive house beat.

What the…

He must have installed a Bluetooth sound system somewhere.

“Noah, what’s going on?”

I paused a moment and recognized the song: “Dream of Love” by Nox Vahn and Mimi Page.

“Consider this your anthem… and what’s going on is that…”—he

paused and appeared by the door with his phone to his ear—“I’m standing right in front of you.”Tears filled my eyes as I dropped the call and rushed toward him. He was dressed in semi-formal attire: white shirt, gray formal trousers, and dark loafers—handsome, as usual.

“I can’t believe you’re here right now… you sneaky bastard!” Rushing with excitement, I flung my arms around him. “I thought you wouldn’t be here for another month!”

“I wanted t—”

My lips collided with his before he could finish his sentence. Kissing Noah was like experiencing the most euphoric state of ecstasy; it was Heaven coming down. No scientist could ever create a hallucinogenic drug to duplicate what I felt, as if trillions of fireworks were going off in the atmosphere at the same time: a supernova blast of sun and moon energy. It was a cosmic crescendo every time we kissed. He breathed life into my soul. I only prayed he felt the same when he kissed me.

“Why’d you stop?” I said, as he pulled back.

“For breath.” He kissed me again with reckless abandon, tracing my

curves.

This was the best surprise ever. I wouldn’t wake up in a hospital bed again, only to be torn away from a beautiful life. This was the real deal. This was Noah Hunter in the flesh. All mine.

“I missed you so much,” he murmured, kissing my neck.
