“Yeah, untilyoucorrupted her and practically robbed her of—”

“Do we really need to go there? I apologized, and she forgave me. Let’s keep the past where it belongs.”

“I’m sorry,” Cammie said. “I didn’t mean to drag up the past.”

“Yeah, well, I paid my karma in full—trust me.”

I didn’t want to be here anymore. I wanted to leave and take Aria with me. This gallery was enormous, but I felt like the walls were closing in on me. My angel was no longer in my line of sight. I kept scanning through crowds to find her. I wasn’t sure why I felt anxious whenever she was on her own.

Where is she?I wondered, hiding my distress.

“Walk with me a bit,” Cammie said. “Let’s catch up.” She grabbed my arm, but I withdrew.

“What’s wrong?” She frowned. “Does it scare you to see the ‘ghost’ of your hottest girlfriend?”

I didn’t know what to say. Cammie was still beautiful, but Aria’s beauty was unmatched. No one could take her place in my eyes.

“I guess I still have that effect on you, Mister Speechless—especially when we touch. Not your fault, though.” Cammie giggled.

“I’m seeing someone,” I said.

“Moving on from the ex really fast, wouldn’t you say? Tell me, who’s this unlucky woman? She must be a rebound.”

She was aggravating me. I didn’t want to be reminded of my past. Nothing about her had changed—except that she was no longer on her father’s payroll. Then again, maybe she still was.

“My love life has nothing to do with you,” I replied.

“Don’t get so defensive. I’m not trying to pry. I’m just curious. You know, I’ve often thought about getting in touch with you again. But I guess my ego always got in the way.”

Her pride had never stopped her from showing up at my door in the past.

“I just didn’t like the way we ended things,” she added.

You mean the wayIended things.

“You moved on, Cammie. I moved on. It’s what people do: they move on.” I looked behind me to see if I could find Aria. Something seemed off with her, and I was worried.

“Looking for someone?”

“Aria.”

“What a protective father. You’re not gonna lose her in this place, Noah. When did you two reconnect?”

This was going to be hard to explain.

“Last year,” I answered.

“Did you go to court to get custody?”

“Yes.”

“How old is she now?”

“Eighteen.”

I hated feeling older than her.

“Wow, so it’s recent.”
