“Hmm…” Doctor Grey pondered a response. I was irritated because I knew what he was thinking. “We shall return to this subject of your estranged brother at a later time.”

“Evan was the least of my problems until he magically appeared out of nowhere.”

“There’s bad blood between you two?”

“To say the least.” I scoffed and stared at a painting on the wall.

Grey scribbled something down. “Would you like to discuss it? You don’t have to go into detail.”

I briefly touched on my childhood with Evan, including the aftermath of that accident, before I candidly discussed my brother’s psychopathy.

“I don’t trust him,” I admitted. “He’s a sociopath, if not a psycho, and I don’t want my daughter spending time with him. My parents put him in therapy as early as seven. Evan always had… behavioral problems—that’s putting it nicely.”

“When did he join your family?”

“He was five years old when my parents brought him home.”

“You hold such negative beliefs about him, Noah. Why?”

“What do you mean, Doc?”

“I just mean this grudge you hold against him—I feel that deep down you know your father’s death was an accident, and that Evan did not mean to shoot him.”

I guess I’ll never know.

“Are you envious of his relationship with Aria?”

I frowned and shook my head. “I’m not jealous of my brother. My hostility toward him is because of the horrible things he’s done to my family. I’ve made a career for myself, despite the generous inheritance dad had left me with. I have a wife, a daughter, a family—I have no reason to be jealous of Evan.”

You should tell him about the conversations you have with me...I tried to tune out that voice and poured myself another glass of water.

“What does Evan do for work?”

“He told me he’s in contracting, and apparently he’s in the business of building and renovating houses for the underprivileged in developing countries.”

“So, he’s making a good living for himself.”

“Allegedly so.” I sounded irritated.

“Does that bother you?”

Of course, Dr. Grey would pick up on it.

“I don’t buy it, Doc. My sister told me he got into photography back when he was in college. And when I last visited, she showed me an extensive amount of his work. He’s good, I’ll give him that much. Although, I’m positive he chose that occupation to sleep with models. But that’s beside the point. Aria told me about all the humanitarian work he’s done after he abandoned his dream career as a fashion photographer. I just find it odd because that’s not the brother I know and have grown up with. I don’t know why she praises him so much. He’s a compulsive liar.”

“People change,” Grey said. “Maybe you’re worried he’ll jeopardize your relationship with Aria. He’s not your biological brother. He had flirted with your daughter, and that may have caused you to—”

“He thought she was my wife at first!” I cut him off.

“Ah. Well, I don’t think you find it comforting to know that your brother would make advances on your wife behind your back.”

“I’m incapable of trusting him.”

“That’s understandable. It seems you have quite a pattern going on in your life right now.”

“What do you mean?”

“Repairing relationships.”
