I guess that was better than hearing him say he took her on an eighty-day trip around the world before he proposed on top of the Eiffel Tower, or the sand dunes of Morocco, or a beach sunset in Bali. The romantic in me was still alive.

Romance is smoke and mirrors.I lamented my reality.

“You’ve gone quiet again.” Noah stroked my face. “What are you mulling over in your mind?”

“You mentioned earlier that I’m a part of you.”

“You are.”

“I feel like I’ve found the missing piece of my soul when I look at you. Don’t you see that when you look at me?”

Silence surrounded us as we stared into each other’s eyes. Was he contemplating a confession? Or was he searching for the most effective way to bury the truth somewhere within his tormented soul?

“I look at you,” Noah said, “and I stand in awe because I don’t know how I created such a beautiful person who outmatches not only her mother in terms of attractiveness, but her father as well. Sometimes I feel like Natalie and I never made you.” He bent an elbow and rested his head in his hand.

“Why do you say that?”

“How could two people who are so imperfect create such perfection?”

“You’re the one who’s perfect, not me,” I candidly confessed.

Noah let out a mirthless laugh. “We both know that’s not true.”

“I don’t feel like an average human being.”

“That’s because you’re not. You’re far from average. You’re too mature for your age in every aspect. How could I have made you? I often wish I hadn’t.”

At least that was something we could both agree on.

“I’m an alien,” I sighed. “From a faraway planet called Dysturbia.”

“Nope.”

“I’m a sex-crazed forest nymph, reincarnated…”

He furrowed his brows and gave methe look,as if to say I had lost my mind.

“Is this the part where I’m supposed to L-O-L and not actually mean it?” Noah said.

“That won’t work; we’re not texting.”

“Ah.”

The song changed to “Sirens of the Sea” by Above & Beyond and Ocean Lab; it was one of my favorites.

I took a deep breath and said, “I’m not sure if it’s my fatally flawed humanity that makes me feel like such an outcast, or the possibility that I really might be part of some other world.”

Noah pressed his lips to my forehead and murmured, “You’re a Siren.”

“A Siren?”

“Are you familiar with Greek mythology?”

“A little.”

“Sirens were known to be beautiful and dangerous creatures. You could compare them to modern dayfemme fataleswho lured men that were voyaging by sea. They used their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck the sailors on their island. The Siren’s song had an appeal that was hard to resist. Once a man was drawn in… the outcome was not exactly a happy one.”

“Are you saying I’d shipwreck you?”
