“Did you not hear me?” I raised my voice. “They were fucking!”

“Don’t use that kind of language around here,” he cautioned.

Amir snickered under his breath. “Noah, buddy, I was at Casey’s restaurant for lunch this afternoon. Let’s swing by his joint right now if you don’t believe me. I’ve brought back leftovers if you’re hungry.”

“What?” I cried out. “He’s lying!”

Noah looked at Amir and then stared at me. I could see the disappointment spreading over his face, and it made me shrink inside myself.

“That won’t be necessary, Amir,” Noah said. “I’m sorry you’re getting dragged into this.”

“So… are we cool, then?”

“Yes,” he replied, glaring at me. “We’re cool.”

I worried he would unleash his wrath once that lying prick was gone.

“All-righty then.” Amir cleared his throat. “I’ll leave you two to chitchat.”

I couldn’t contain my anger any longer. All afternoon, I felt like an active volcano that was ready to erupt.

“How can you stand there and lie to his face like that? What kind of friend are you?”

“Aria!” Noah’s raging uproar startled me. “Must I remind you where you are?”

Amir looked at me with a smug smile. I bet he was laughing on the inside.

Tame your shadow, Aria. Tame it.

“Apologize to my colleague!” Noah demanded.

“What? No way! He’s sleeping with your wife!”

“Don’t worry about it, man,” Amir said. “I’m gonna get out of—”

“I said, now, Aria!” Noah’s voice sounded threatening, but his scornful stare was far worse.

My intention was never to humiliate him; I just wanted him to believe me. Pulling off a sticky note from Noah’s desk, I snatched a pen and started writing.

“A yellow Mustang withthislicense plate was parked in the driveway of our home,” I stated, showing off the note. “This is Amir’s car.”

“I don’t own a yellow Mustang.”

“I know you don’t.” Noah glanced at him, folding his arms in his chest. “I’ll look over the case file you left me. I’m gonna have that chat now with my daughter, Amir. And since she’s not willing to say she’s sorry, I’ll apologize on her behalf.”

“Don’t bother.”

“I have a teenage daughter, too,” Amir replied. “They can be a handful. Good luck, bro.” He faked an empathetic smile and finally left.

Noah’s heated eyes bore into mine, as if he were holding back his fury.

“You’re gonna regret this once you find out I’m telling the truth.”

“I don’t know what kind of stunt you’re trying to pull here, Aria—but compromising an innocent man’s reputation is wrong.”

“I’m not trying to pull anything!”

Well, except for that attractive silver tie around his neck.ThatI didn’t mind pulling.
