“Uh… no…” Evan flashed a guilty smile, cracking open a window.

“You’re high, aren’t you? Were you guys smoking weed?”

That wasn’t all we were doing,he thought with a smirk. “Don’t tell your dad.”

“I won’t be telling him anything anymore.”

She finished her soda and sunk back into the sofa.

Evan studied her face and asked, “What happened?”

“It’s a long story.”

“I’ve got time.”

Hesitant at first, she eventually summarized what happened when she discovered Vanessa’s infidelity.

“That’s unfortunate,” Evan replied.

“He thinks I’m lying. He refuses to believe me.”

“Welcome to my world, sweetheart. You and I are in the same boat,” he sighed. “Noah never takes me seriously. He always thinks I’m lying; even when the truth is staring him in the face.”Reaching for the Mason jar, Evan grabbed it off the coffee table and stood up.

“Where are you going?”

“I’ll be right back.”

“I know what’s in the jar.”

Evan paused.

“Can you roll another blunt?” asked Aria.

“Is that what you think is in here?” He flashed a crooked smile.

“Well, let’s see: you’re holding a silver painted jar, and running off to hide it somewhere… What could be in there aside from the obvious?”

Evan chuckled, sitting back down. “Clever girl.” He twisted the lid.

“Wow! That is strong!”—she fanned the air—“I can smell it from here.”

“They grew this strain in the West Coast.” Evan measured the marijuana bud on a digital scale before he dropped it inside his titanium herb grinder. “You’ll feel a nice, relaxing body high,” he added, “easing into euphoria.”

“Let’s puff the magic dragon!”

“You’re not supposed to be smoking this stuff.”

“I’ve done worse.” Aria shrugged.

“Really, love? Like what?”

Like trying to sleep with Noah.

“Well?” He waited.

“Like cigarettes and booze,” she answered. “They’re more harmful in comparison, if you ask me. At least cannabis has health benefits.”

Evan chortled to himself while preparing his joint. “Does your dad know you’re here?”
