There was a long silence between us as Dr. Grey wrote some things down.
“I can see that you truly want the best for her,” he said.
“I really do.”
“Would you mind if I emailed Aria? I’d like to reach out and encourage her to see me. She might refuse therapy because she feels intimidated or nervous.”
“Go ahead.”
He grabbed a piece of paper and pen from his desk and handed it to me. I wrote Aria’s email address before sliding it back to him.
“What are you gonna say to her?”
“I just want her to know that if she’s ever in trouble or needs to talk, my door is always open. If I can create an opportunity to gain her trust through one-on-one sessions, then I’m positive she’ll be more willing to receive counseling with you as well.” He smiled.
“I hope you can convince her. She’s adamant about taking an oath of silence forever with me. What do you suggest I do?”
“Keep trying to open a conversation with her. Tell her that silent treatments fix nothing, and that you want her to communicate with you. She’s exhibiting passive aggressive behavior. Have you thought about telling your wife about all this?”
“And destroy my marriage? No way! I know I messed up. I admit all my wrongs, which is why I put a stop to what was going on with me and Aria as quickly as it had started. These past three weeks… there’s been no contact between me and her. I haven’t even hugged her, and she hasn’t been affectionate with me, either.”
“Has Vanessa picked up on this?”
“Yeah, but she assumes it’s because of my daughter’s constant rebelling and theEvan situation.”
“That’s part of the reason, right?”
It took me a while to give an honest answer, but I finally said, “Yes.”
“You feel angry and betrayed by her,” Grey added. “At the same time, you feel you have no right to be.”
“Yes,” I sighed.
“Well, I don’t want to force you to do anything you’re not ready for. I can only offer you my professional opinion. I think it’s good you’ve controlled your desires and have taken preventative measures to abstain from sex with Aria. Don’t beat yourself up in feeling this attraction. Yes, you acted on it to an extent, but I believe there’s still hope to heal.
“Genetic sexual attraction has detrimental side effects on the family unit. And you are right when you expressed that there would be a very limited future if you assume the role of her unlawful lover. Time and patience will mend your relationship with your daughter. I guarantee the moment she falls in love with another man, she won’t desire you and will stop seducing you.”
Is that what you really want? Do you truly want her to stop feeling this way about you?That taunting voice echoed in my head once more.
“I recommend increasing our visits to three times a week. I know this is going to be a struggle for you, which is why I feel it’s best to discuss this more frequently, to make sure you keep a clear head and make rational decisions instead of impulsive ones.”
“Sure, whatever you say, Doc.”
“I’d also like to delve into your history with your brother next session. It would be helpful if you were to open up with no reservations.”
“I’ll try my best.”
“That’s all I can hope for.” He smiled, glancing at his watch. “It appears our time is up.”
“Thank you for seeing me on such short notice. I’m sorry I had to cancel yesterday.”
“It’s all right.” He smiled warmly. “It’s a beautiful Friday afternoon. You should take your wife out on a date.”
“It’s always beautiful in California,” I said. “But yeah, that sounds like a good idea.”
“I’ve scheduled you for Monday at 2p.m.”
“That’s fine. Thanks, Doc.”
