When he gets up, I watch Blaze walking my way with a shit-eating grin. “Who’s the pretty boy?”

“Jaxon. You’re going to have to get your own way home.”

“I’ll call Elijah. Are you coming back to the house?”

“If things go as I plan, I’ll take him to the apartment in the city.”

“Be safe. Stay strapped and wear a condom.” He spins on his heel and disappears into the crowd. My eyes drift to Jaxon walking toward me like a moth to the flame.

I stand up when he gets to me. “Are you ready?”

He nods, and I place my hand on the small of his back to lead him outside to the limo. The driver opens the door, and we slide inside. “Take us to the city.” I give my driver, Dalton, a look, and he nods in understanding.

With any luck, I’ll end up with Jaxon in my bed tonight.

CHAPTER2

JAXON

Ilook over at Kane beside me and wonder what the fuck I just got myself into.

Kane is an intimidating presence and not just because of his size. His thick, black hair comes past his ears, and his eyes are a strange hazel color. His eyes are what intimidates me the most because they’re constantly assessing, and it’s unnerving. But as soon as I spotted him at the ball, I knew what I had to do. I just had to wait for him to get away from the fake blonde with even faker tits.

“Pull over here,” Kane tells the driver. His voice is deep and has a Russian accent that makes his words harsh. The limo glides to a stop, and Kane’s door is opened seconds later. He gestures for me to follow him and places his hand on my back like he did earlier. “I’m assuming you’ve been to Times Square?” I nod. “I have a few things to show you that you haven’t seen.”

He leads me to the sidewalk, and I turn to look at the limo driver. “He just waits for you?”

“That is his job.” He glances at me. “Do you not have a driver?”

I shake my head. “I’m new to this whole thing. I didn’t grow up with my dad. I didn’t even find out about him until he died.”

“How did you end up at the charity ball?”

I laugh. “There’s a bunch of stuff that I must do to get my inheritance. How did you end up there?”

“Necessary evil.” He turns us down an alley, and my nerves kick into high gear. “I have several businesses around the city that require me to show up.”

I look over my shoulder toward the sidewalk we left for this dark as fuck alley. “Where are we going?”

“Are you nervous, Jaxon?”

“Uh. Yeah. I don’t know you, and you’re taking me down an alley that smells like piss.”

Kane laughs; it comes out deep and husky. “I’m not taking you to your death. This is just a shortcut.” He takes another turn, and the scene in front of me unfolds. “There is more to this city than meets the eye.” It looks like a music festival, with a band playing on stage and dancers dressed in fifties-era outfits. “All the best things hide in plain sight.”

“How did you find this place?” I ask in awe.

“New York has been my home for a long time.”

We sit down at a table to the side of the stage. “How old are you?”

“Thirty-seven. You?”

“Twenty-two. Have you always lived in New York?”

“We moved here when I was six from Russia. Where are you from?”

“North Carolina.”
