Alex’s eyes twinkle with humor. “Yeah, sweetheart. You will be.”

“I love you.” I don’t give him a chance to answer because I attack his mouth.

I’m overcome with emotions and don’t know how to process this. No one has ever done anything like this for me before. Usually I keep my more dorky interests to myself because no one cared about it, or just made fun of me. Alex has always made it seem okay for me to share my likes with him and I’ve loved that. But this is more than that. I can’t even imagine how he managed to pull this off. We’re not celebrities or rolling in money. They don’t just rent out exhibits to anyone, yet he somehow pulled it off.

Finally he pulls away, his eyes as wet with tears as mine. “I love you too, Zach. I love you so fucking much. I’d do anything to keep that look on your face.”

I shake my head. “Just you being yourself is enough.”

“Maybe, but you deserve everything, and maybe I can’t manage that, but I could give you this.”

I take his hand and lead him towards the table. I need to at least taste this food and experience this before our emotions get the best of us.

“How?” I ask again, referring to how he managed to set this up.

He grins. “Honestly, I got lucky. I have a buddy from college whose wife is one of the curators of special events here. He was able to hook me up.”

I shake my head. It had to be harder than that but I’m not going to ruin the illusion if he doesn’t want me to.

“Come on, lamb, let’s eat before it gets cold.”

I sit down and we busy ourselves with the best takeout in the area. That’s another mystery he probably won’t solve for me. The restaurant is on the other side of the city, so how he even got it here, I’ll likely never know.

Eventually I’m distracted by the exhibit again and we wander around looking at everything. It’s so freaking cool. How did I not know this was here? I’d have been annoyed if I missed it. I walk up to the glass display where some of the rings they used are securely displayed. But there’s something on top of the display that wasn’t there before.

I take a step closer squinting as the black box. Is that…oh gods. No, I have to be seeing things. There’s no way– I walk up and nearly collapse as I see the most gorgeous ring glinting inside the box.

My pulse is pounding in my ears as I turn towards Alex who’s…on one knee? Gods.

He reaches around me with a grin on his face and holds up the ring.

“Zach, I love you more than I’d ever be able to express. You’re my fated mate, my person, my one true love. I’ve never been happier than when I’m with you. Will you marry me?”

I collapse to my knees and grab his face in my hands. Tears are flowing down my face as I look at the ring in his hands. It’s a white gold braided band. It’s thick, simple, masculine. Perfect.

“I love you so much, Alex. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

His eyes light up. “Is that a yes?”

I laugh and kiss his perfect lips. “Yes. It’s a yes. I can’t wait to be your husband. Put the ring on me, please.”

We’re both laughing and crying as he slips the ring on my finger. And then we’re kissing again, unable to keep our hands off each other as we kneel on the artificial grass of the Shire. Best night ever.

We still haven’t gained composure as noise explodes from outside, making it clear it’s midnight.

Alex tightens his grip on me. “Happy New Year, love.”

“Happy New Year. Here’s to the best year yet.”

We kiss each other as the sky lights up with fireworks outside.

The End
