Tim smiles, reaching over and tucking my hair behind my ear, his fingers lingering on my cheek.

“You can have whatever job, whatever career you like. I’ll be your biggest cheerleader. Though,” he tips his head to the side with a small smile, “it might be best, if you say yes, that you get a job here in San Diego. Since that’s where I live.”

My eyes flutter closed, my heart thudding in my chest. I chew on my lip until Tim sighs, drawing me close until our foreheads are pressed together.

“We can sort all that out later. Please say yes.”

The plea in his voice tips me over the precipice of indecision. Opening my eyes, I stare up into his.

“Yes,” I whisper, catching a flash of triumph in Tim’s eyes as he kisses me, tipping me backward and covering my body with his own.

Timothy

I wake up to my arms full of Angie and sigh contentedly.Thisis how I’m supposed to live my life. I know it. Nothing else has ever felt so right. Angie stirs, blinking up at me and smiling.

“Do I get to see this mysterious ring now?”

I grin down at her, kissing her tenderly and reaching over to snag my suit jacket from the floor. Reaching into the inside pocket, I pull out the ring box and hand it to her.

Angie’s eyes dart over to mine, and she holds it up tentatively. I’m reminded of Christmas morning, when she opened the earrings I bought her. The earrings that she was wearing yesterday to Haven Freight’s offices. That was one clue that she might hear me out.

I hold my breath when she opens it, and her eyes widen as she takes in the ring. I put a lot of thought into this and I’m pretty sure I got the perfect ring for Angie. It’s a twisted vintage round diamond, with a curved band studded with smaller diamonds. It’s not over the top huge, because that’s not Angie’s style. It’s understated, elegant and incredibly beautiful. Just like my Angie.

Her breath catches and she strokes it lightly as her eyes dart up to mine, suspiciously bright.

“Do you like it?” I ask, uncertainty coloring my voice.

“It’s beautiful. I love it.”

Feeling on top of the world, I reach over, plucking the ring from the box and sliding it onto her finger. Fuck, that looks good there. I cup Angie’s jaw and kiss her like there’s no tomorrow.

“You’rebeautiful, and I love you,” I whisper when I break the kiss, not caring how soppy I sound. Angie giggles, looking down at the ring on her finger.

Climbing out of bed and heading into the shower, I call over my shoulder, “Come on. Uncle Bill will be waiting for you at breakfast.”

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Angela

Tim is lounging at the desk in the corner of the room when I emerge from the bathroom wearing another of my new dresses.

His eyes drink me in as I fix the Christmas earrings he gave me to my ears. His gaze lingers there, moving to meet mine. He’s wearing his suit from yesterday.

Standing, he crosses to me, cupping my jaw and kissing me thoroughly. “I’ll leave you to breakfast with Uncle Bill. I’ll see you later.”

“You’re leaving me to face the music on my own?”

Chuckling, Tim winks, opening the door to leave. “I faced the music yesterday. Now it’s your turn.”

I mouth as he leaves, the door swinging shut behind him Shit. Bill. Grabbing my purse, I hurry down to the hotel restaurant, flashing the staff member a smile.

“Bill Westerhaven?”

They rush to lead me there directly. It’s always the same when I invoke his name. Like magic. Tim was right. Bill is waiting for me in the dining room as the hostess gestures to the table he is seated at.

It’s in the corner, next to the huge floor to ceiling windows, overlooking the hotel pool and the city center. I smile at the hostess as she melts away, turning back to where my boss is seated.

Bill’s eyes drop to my hand and when they alight on the ring, they dart back up to my face and he stands, beaming, to hold his arms out. I start in surprise, and tentatively step into them for a hug. I’ve never hugged Bill before, because he’s my boss, but this feels right.
