I want to give him one, but I also love him calling me Sunshine. Even if I don’t know why he does it. Our shared love of the outdoors is a possibility, and more likely the reason. A nod to our initial conversation, something nobody else was there for, so it’s a good code word in that sense.

“The camera caught you. It’s live, so I can’t edit you out. I’m so sorry. I promise to keep it secret that I’m here, and I ruined it. I’ll pack my stuff.” I turn to walk away; heartbroken I broke his trust in me, disappointed our time together is over before it truly began.

A hand on my arm stops me, his other lifting to my face, the thumb sweeping softly against my cheek. “It’s okay, Sunshine.”

“But what if it’s not?”

“It will be.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“Because I refuse to think otherwise.”

“You’re just going to mind meld with the universe to get your way?”

“Not really how that works, but basically, yes. I’ll show it how I want it to be and it’ll understand.” I laugh, no longer as worried as when I initially realized what happened. If he can be calm, then I can, too. Fine, ish. His thumb is still caressing my cheek, the other fingers now cupping it. “Danny,” I whisper, not wanting to speak any louder and risk him withdrawing. In more ways than one.

“Rae,” he says in the same volume. “We shouldn’t,” he adds as he steps closer, definitely sending mixed signals, but since he didn’t retreat, I know which side is winning.

Me.

I don’t know which of us breaks the distance first, and I don’t care. The only thing that matters is his lips on mine.

And that he doesn’t stop. Since the two are related, it still counts as one.

His hand shifts to the back of my head, fisting my hair and keeping me in place. Like I’d ever want to move.

Wrapping my arms around his neck, I rise to my tiptoes, pushing my breasts against his chest, shivering when he groans.

I know this is probably frowned upon giving our roles in this situation, but right now? He’s not a cop and I’m not a witness.

We’re simply a man and woman that feel a connection that deserves to be given a chance to grow. It may crash and burn once my life is able to return to normal, when we aren’t in such close proximity, and he’s no longer the anchor keeping me grounded.

Though I don’t think so.

This isn’t a product of any of that.

Sure, it’s what brought us into each other’s sphere, but there has to be something there to ignite. I’ve come in contact with a plethora of people during my years on this planet and none of them have caused this reaction in me.

This need.

A hand tapping my ass has me instinctively jumping, my legs circling his waist, my back hitting a wall as Danny has shifted us to it. Trapped between him and it, I’ve never felt freer.

More myself.

This is what was missing.

Whowas missing.

**Danny**

We shouldn’t be doing this. At least, not yet.

Shivers would have my ass, and possibly my badge, for fraternizing with a witness. On an active case, no less.

But I find that I don’t care. Nothing is more important than Rae. She may have come into my life because of my position, but that’s not the reason I want, need, her to say in it. My world now consists of two time periods – before and with Rae. For me, there is no after.

The closer I get to her, the more I want. Her scent invades my senses, and I pull my mouth from hers, burying my nose in in her shoulder, dotting the soft skin with kisses.
