“That’s right,” Ivy said. “Never again.”

“As Jasmine said, it’s in the past. I don’t want to talk about it. It means nothing.”

“Is that why you easily moved here?” she asked. It made sense now that Dahlia almost jumped at the opportunity. “Was it hard to work with Shawn after?”

“It wasn’t hard,” Dahlia said. “We worked at the same place for a year, but he didn’t work in my group. I didn’t see him anymore. He wasn’t happy I ended things. It’s all good.”

“Then now we need to get you a man here,” she said. “It’s possible. I found one.”

“For now,” Dahlia said. “And don’t take that the wrong way. I’m just saying it’s only been a few months and no one knows what can happen.”

“I know,” she said.

When a phone rang in the distance, Wesley came walking in. He’d been in his office. “Jasmine, your phone was in our room. Your mother is calling.”

Jasmine wiped her hands and reached for the phone. “Hi, Mom. You’re on speaker with Dahlia and Ivy.”

“Hi, Mom,” she and Dahlia said.

“Dad and I thought we’d call you now. Then we’ll check in with Chase and Mark.”

“I had hoped you’d call later,” Ivy said. “When Brooks was here. You could meet him.”

“We told Chase and Mark when we’d call them and then we are going to get some sleep,” her father said.

She wanted to be annoyed that she couldn’t be the last one called, as Brooks would be here in an hour.

“It’s fine,” Dahlia said. “They will meet or talk to Brooks another time. Maybe Ivy could plan a call with just the two of them and you guys?”

She wasn’t sure why she didn’t think of that herself. “I’ll try that,” she said. But she knew that might be pushing more than Brooks would want right now. If he was here when the call came in, it wouldn’t seem like such a formal introduction.

Then she had to remind herself that she’d met his parents so he shouldn’t say anything about meeting hers.

They talked to her parents for about twenty minutes. Cori was napping and missed the call too but Jasmine didn’t seem upset over that.

An hour later, Brooks showed up.

“Hi,” she said, moving close to him. “I’m glad you could come today.”

“Me too,” he said. “I’ve got some wine.”

“That was nice of you,” she said. “We like wine.”

She led Brooks into the living room in the back of the house. “This is a nice place,” he said quietly.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Like nothing we’ve ever lived in before.”

“Me neither,” he said.

“Everyone, Brooks brought us wine.”

“Hi,” her sisters said to her boyfriend.

Wesley walked forward and took the wine out of Brooks’s hand.

“Glad you could make it,” Wesley said.

“Thanks for the invitation,” he said.
