She moved off the bed and stood up next to him, then hugged him. “Relax, Brooks. I can see it on your face. You swore so loudly you scared me and then you turned white. Is the thought of a baby that horrible?”

“No,” he said. “It’s just...”

“We are barely in a relationship,” she said softly. “I get it. But I would never trap a man.”

She moved to get her clothes and started to dress. He went back to his room to do the same and they met in the kitchen where she was starting dinner.

“I didn’t mean that.”

“I know,” she said. “I understand.”

“If it happened we’d figure it out.”

“It’s not going to happen,” she said. “Because I’m sure you’re still going to use condoms to make sure of that.”

He was and then felt like an ass. But better safe than sorry.

“Can I help you with dinner?”

“Sure,” she said. “You can chop the onion.”

“The worst part of the dinner prep,” he said.

“Yep,” she said. “That is what you get for scaring me. I’m lucky I didn’t pee on your bed.”

She was laughing. She wasn’t upset and he wasn’t sure why when he was terrified and feeling like a jerk for that reason.

She’d never once given any indication that she would trap him or want that to happen and he wasn’t sure if that bothered him that she hadn’t or that he wished she would.

The confusion he’d felt since he started to date her was mounting more than receding and he didn’t think that was good for a man that pretty much knew every step of his life.

Living The Nightmare

Ten days later, Brooks realized he couldn’t put off seeing Ivy again.

He was starting to feel like it was passive-aggressive that he was using work as an excuse to not see or spend time with her.

Not even talk to her.

She hadn’t even made that big of a deal about it and he wasn’t sure if she didn’t care all that much or she was trying to be someone she wasn’t.

Of course, that only fueled his confusion even more to the point that he was ready to pull his hair out.

She’d texted him this morning and asked if he was going to be busy tonight. She normally spent Friday or Saturday, sometimes both nights, with him.

Last weekend he was working.

It wasn’t a lie. He’d gotten called out Friday at the end of the day and then just stayed longer than he needed to so said he’d see Ivy on Saturday. But when Saturday rolled around, he found things to do for work and didn’t get home until late again.

Sunday, she didn’t even ask and he felt bad about it.

And feeling that way just pissed him off more too.

He said he didn’t need or want this drama in his life months ago and yet here he was...living the nightmare of it.

If most of the drama was due to his own personal issues, he wouldn’t admit it to anyone.
