Poppy started to rub her hands together. “You came to the right place. I’m sure your sisters think you’re nuts for noticing that. Mine would.”

“They had a few comments to make about it,” she admitted.

“Not me. I want the details. Name and description. Start there.”

“Brooks Scarsdale. He’s about six foot three of solid deliciousness. Dark hair and eyes. Serious for sure. I’m not sure he smiles.”

“He’s not there to be smiling,” Poppy said. “But broody is its own form of sexy.”

“Yes, it is. Jasmine and Dahlia said he’s too old for me.”

“How do they know?”

“Beats me,” she said. “I mean, guessing, I’d say he’s probably mid-thirties. I don’t think he’s forty. Wesley is ten years older than Jasmine so she has nothing to say about it.”

“Agreed,” Poppy said. “Age is only a number, not a feeling. Just means he has more experience in certain areas.”

She laughed at the wiggle of Poppy’s eyebrows. “Exactly.”

“So what are you going to do about it?” Poppy asked.

“What can I do?” she asked. This was why she wanted to talk to Poppy. If anyone understood or could give her advice and not judge, it’d be this sister.

“Well, you know where he works. I’m guessing he’s based out of the same location as Luke. You could ask Luke when you see him again.”

“I could but won’t. I don’t see Luke often and he’d just think I was nuts and say nothing. I mean I could ask Heather to ask Luke, but that is starting to feel more like high school.” Not that she ever experienced any normal high school.

“Good point.”

“I do have his card with his contact information. We have to email him the list of things that were stolen and damages to the apartment too. I finished with my list and I’m supposed to give it to Dahlia so she can add it to the costs she came up with in terms of replacement items.”

Her sister was in her sweet spot last night pricing items of everything they had to replace. Food costs, any clothing or other household items ruined. The money and the jewelry.

“Rather than email it to him, bring it in person. You’re looking pretty hot today. Red and all. Fire engine red pants. Light him up.”

Poppy did a little booty shake with those words.

Ivy laughed and joined in. “I could do that. It doesn’t mean he’s there though.”

“Doesn’t mean he’s not,” Poppy said. “Did he have a ring on his finger?”

“No,” she said. “I looked too.”

“Not that a ring means all that much, but you never know anything until you try. If he’s not there, leave the list. Then you’ve got a reason to do a follow-up email to see if he got it.”

“I like the way you think. Dahlia is probably going to give me a hard time about it though.”

“Don’t let her,” Poppy said. Poppy was tapping her chin. “Tell her you need to see this through. A healing of sorts. You want to take charge and it feels more concrete delivering it in person rather than an email.”

She shook her head. “You’re good.”

Poppy took a bow with a flourish of her hand. “Years of practice. It’s not mean, it’s just sort of sneaky. You’re doing what you need to do while doing what needs to be done with it.”

“Surprisingly I understand what you just said and believe it.”

“Then I’m glad I could help. Let’s get to work so you can meet with Lily, then leave when you want and see if you can seek out this sexy investigator.”

“Brooks,” she said. “I like the name.”
