Montana heard her voice mail come on as he turned to stare at Grant. “No. This is wrong.” A stench of blackmail and setup assaulted his senses. “We’re still missing a huge piece of the puzzle.”

“The Sargent is going to talk with Jade Devereaux himself. Maybe that will help.”

He rubbed his forehead and ran through all the evidence. “Don’t you think all of this sudden information is a bit too convenient?”

The hesitation was palpable.

“Maybe. Maybe not.”

“You know the answer.”

“Maybe our killer is losing it. We’re here. Let’s see if the asshole is home.” Grant grinned, placed the car into park and cut the engine, and raced out of the car.

“You’ve reached Dr. Destiny Blade. Please leave me a message at the tone and I’ll call you back as soon as possible. If this is an emergency, please dial 911.”

He slumped in the seat, his hand shaking. Why wasn’t she answering? In his mind’s eye, he could see Christopher’s face – the face of a devil.

And it infuriated him.

Because she’s soon to belong to me forever…

CHAPTER 25

“Where are we?” Destiny craned her neck, trying to figure out where they were. The interstate had led them outside of the city, but after the first turn off, she wasn’t entirely certain where she was. What she did know is that this wasn’t the way to Christopher’s house.

“A special retreat Chris has access to. I’ve only been here once, but I think you’re going to love the place. Huge. He’s a very special man with incredible tastes. But you already knew that.” Jade nestled into the seat and smiled at Destiny.

“Special retreat? Interesting.”

“There are many aspects about the man you don’t know about. He’s rich and powerful. He also gets exactly what he wants.”

Uneasy, she tried to locate any landmarks. She had a sickening feeling. “Why didn’t Chris call me again?”

“I told you, a business deal he was finishing. He’s consumed by his work and with play. I certainly don’t mind helping him,” Jade cooed. “More champagne?”

Destiny glanced down at her hands, turning them over. She hadn’t been drugged. Perhaps this was exactly as Jade said, but aspects of the night weren’t adding up. “No, I’m fine.”

“Have it your way. We’ll be there in just a couple of minutes. I’ll leave you both alone of course. I’m certain Master Sampson will take you home in the morning.”

“Of course.” She remained quiet as the driver turned into a driveway. She touched her purse, feeling the buzz. She would bet Montana was calling her. When the driver pulled up in front of a lavish home, she swallowed and chastised herself. This wasn’t like Chris’ other house. The aging colonial was a mansion, but from what she could tell given the front lights, needed some work. “Here?”

“Here. I’ll take you to the door then I’m off. I have a wonderful evening planned myself.”

Destiny eased out of the car. She noticed a dark Mercedes parked just a few yards away. Christopher was already here. The realization put her at ease. They walked toward the front door.

“There you go. Twenty thousand dollars. Somehow, I don’t think you actually care about the money. Do you?” Jade laughed as she backed away.

No, she certainly didn’t give a shit about the money. She waited until Jade was in the car before knocking on the door. She heard footsteps and smoothed down her dress. At least she was going to enjoy the night.

“Welcome. I have a very special evening in store for you.”

“Hold on. You’re that damn reporter.” She jerked back, unprepared for the asshole standing in front of her. Her instinct told her to run.

He laughed. “Guilty as charged. I’m so sorry that I fooled you, or at least tried to. You saw right through me.”

Exhaling, she took another step back. “Why did you come to my office?”

“Honesty here. I wanted to meet you. Chris told me you were amazing and suggested that getting together would be an incredible experience. I wasn’t convinced so I concocted a story. I apologize again.”
