"Young man, I’m aware you’re doing your job, but if I have to march in there, I’m prepared to do so. I’m not leaving without seeing him."

"He’s on a conference call-"

"I’ll wait until he is off the call." Joseph told him with a determined look on his face. Matching over to one of the comfortable visitor's chairs, he sat down and crossed his hands over his chest, watching as the assistant stared at him in consternation.

"I’ll let him know you’re here as soon as he is off the call."

"Do that." Stretching out his legs, Joseph picked up a magazine and leafed through it with a lack of interest. It was his first time in the building and was impressed by the state-of-the-art structure, the tastefully decorated lobby downstairs and the wide-open spaces.

The man had done very well for himself and had forced his way into Alessia’s life and then dumped her after- Huffing out a breath, he tried to calm himself. He’d left his daughter in a hospital bed with tubes attached to help her get some fluids inside her. He was the cause of it.

He looked up when the assistant cleared his throat. "He’s finished with his call and wants you to go in."

With a curt nod, he rose and strode over to push the double doors open. The office was larger than his and had a breathtaking view of the city.

The carpet was powder blue and swallowed his feet up to the ankles. Simple elegance were the words that came to mind. The man was standing behind the baronial desk in his shirt sleeves, a neutral expression on his face.

"Mr. Vanderweld. This is a surprise. I have five minutes-"

"You son of a bitch."

The neutral expression disappeared to be replaced by fury. "I’ll make allowances for the fact you’re an old man, but I won’t have you coming here and insulting me."

"You did that to her. You’re sitting here in your cushy office while my daughter is laid up in a hospital bed!"

"What? What did you say?"

"You knocked her up and she can’t keep anything down. Her life is in danger-"

"Which hospital?" Maxwell was already grabbing his jacket and phone.

"I’m not-"

"Which hospital, dammit! If you don’t tell me, I’ll find out for myself. Which hospital?"

"St. Josephs. I-"

Maxwell was already out the door and shouting instructions to his very startled assistant. "I have to go. Cancel all of my appointments for the day."

"The calls-"

"Reschedule them and ask Vinny to have my car ready by the time I get to the parking lot."

"Yes, sir-" Grabbing the phone, he placed the call to Vinny and watched as the old man shuffled his way out.

Perhaps it wasn’t a good idea to drive himself, but he wanted control of the vehicle. It wasn’t lunch hour yet and the traffic was horrible. "Come on!" Pressing down on the horn, he managed to get the vehicle in front of him moving.

She was pregnant and in the hospital. Her life was in danger. What the hell did that mean? “Move!” Keeping his hand on the horn, he bulleted through the lights just as the amber shifted to red. He’d probably get a cop chasing after him, but at this point he didn’t give a damn. He had to get to her.

"Jesus! Move! Move!" What the hell were people doing out on the street at this time of the day? He almost cried with relief when the hospital came into view.

Racing into the parking lot, and thankful he’d chosen the Corvette, he parked as near to the entrance as possible and rushed into the lobby. The charge nurse, or whoever the hell she was, had an explosion of dark curls and a fierce look on her face.

"I’m Matthew-"

"I know who you are."
