"Which makes it easier. I need to see the doctor in charge of Alessia Vanderweld."

"That would be Dr. Jones." Picking up the phone, she paged him. "He’ll be right with you."

"Thank you." He managed a smile as he turned away from the desk. Within minutes, the doctor was there.

"Mr. Callister. What’s this about?"

"Alessia. I need to see her."

"I don't understand."

"I’m her- the baby is mine."

"I see. Will you come this way, please?" He led them through the waiting area which was crammed with people of all ages and race.

"It's the summer and a virus has been plaguing us for the past few weeks."

"How is she?"

"She’s hanging in there. We have her on a drip as she can’t keep anything down."

"The baby?"

"Surprisingly, the heartbeat is very strong. She’s suffering from what is called Hyperemesis Gravidarum. I understand it’s hereditary as her late mother suffered from the condition as well. Here we are." He pushed the doors of a private room open. "She’s lost some weight."

That was putting it mildly. Maxwell felt like someone had punched him in the stomach and finished by shoving a poker in as well. The woman lying in the hospital bed looked like a skeleton.

"I’ll be around if you need me."

He barely acknowledged the man as he made his way into the room. Pulling up a chair, he sat and took her hand, careful not to disturb the tubes running from her vein to the machine. He wouldn’t wake her, he decided, but just wait until she was up- The thought was barely formed before her eyes flickered open.

"Maxwell," Her cultured voice was hushed as she stared at him. "You’re here. I’m not dreaming."

"No." Bending his head, he kissed the back of her hand.

"How come you’re here?"

"Your Dad charged into my office and laid into me. Said I knocked you up. His exact words." He smiled at her tenderly. "I have to ask, darling, is it mine?"

Her eyes widened and he felt his heart breaking at the wounded expression on her face.

"I had to ask, seeing as you were with that guy."

"Poor Mark." She sighed softly. "He was so patient with me and I had to tell him it wasn’t working. He never touched me. I couldn't bear for him to. I think it was that time at the gallery opening-"

"In the park." His hand tightened on her a little. "I should have known."

"I’m sorry. How is this going to affect your relationship with the actress?"

"It wasn’t like that. I couldn't touch her either." He shook his head. "We’re not together anymore; it wasn’t fair to her. I should have fought for you. I shouldn’t have allowed you to insist on the secrecy."

"Now, I’m a wreck." Tears rolled down her cheeks. "I look awful."

"You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever known." He told her softly.

"I look like a skeleton." She sniffed. "I haven’t been able to keep anything down for the past two weeks and I thought it was stress. I couldn’t sleep. Ever since we stopped seeing each other, it’s been so difficult. I tried work and when I was busy, it was fine until I went into my room."

"What utter fools we were. It was the same for me."
