"I gathered that."

"Good." Squaring his shoulders, he started out of the room. "I promised to be there in the room with her and I don't want to her to wake and not see me."

"I’ll head on home. Please keep me posted."

Maxwell nodded and left the room. Lowering himself into the chair, Joseph cradled the glass of water, a thoughtful expression on his face. The man was solid and completely in love with Alessia. Suddenly, it didn’t matter his background or who he was, it just mattered that he was going to be there for Alessia, no matter what.

"Darling,” He smiled slightly as he spoke to his wife. “ That’s all we ever wanted for her.”

“I’m here, darling." Rising from the chair in the corner of the room, he hurried over to take her hand. "I’m here."

"I thought you’d left."

"I told you I wouldn't. I won't."

"Where’s Daddy?"

"He went home to get some rest. Are you okay?"

She nodded. "Are you staying?"

"Nothing could get me to leave." He promised.

"Can you get into bed with me?" She pleaded.

"Sweetheart-" He nodded to the IV tubes.

"On the other side. I just want to feel you."

"Okay." Kicking off his shoes, he let go of her hand and went to the opposite side of the bed and climbed in. Carefully, placing a hand around her shoulder, he pulled her into his arms gently. “Better?”

“Yes.” She snuggled against him and closed her eyes. “I’m sorry."

"For what, darling?"

"For putting us through so much. I should have told him all along."

"You should have, but that's in the past now." He kissed her forehead. I ended things with Annie, the charade was getting to both of us and I realized I couldn’t get you out of my mind." He stroked her arm.

"Especially after our last encounter. I couldn’t sleep - as a matter of fact I’ve stopped sleeping in my bed and was using the guest room next to it. I have your panties." He added whimsically.

"What?" She stared at him with a frown.

"The first and only time you were there, you left your panties. A flimsy black lace pair that I slept with under my pillow."

"Oh, Maxwell." She whispered, burying her face into his shoulder. "I’ve been such an idiot."

"Shh, baby." He rubbed her back gently. "I’m here now and I’m never leaving you. You never told me your mother had problems carrying you."

"I never thought about it and, even if I did, it wouldn’t have mattered."

"Sweetheart-"

"No." She shook her head. "I don't mind going through what I’m going through."

Tilting her chin up, he gave her a gently reproving look. "I do. I hate the fact I have a hand in causing you such distress."
