"I love you so much." She whispered.

" I love you too much to see you go through this. Baby, you’re so thin."

"The doctors say I’ll gain the weight back. We’ll get through it. Now that you’re here, I can get through anything."

"I’m not going anywhere." He kissed her forehead softly. “I’m here to stay."

She fell asleep again and the doctors assured him that her body was getting the much-needed rest and sustenance from the fluids.

"She’ll be drifting off every few minutes." He was told.

"Is it okay for me to stay here with her like this?"

"Of course. We could set up somewhere for you-"

"Here is fine. I just want to be here when she wakes up."

He had to leave at one point to take an important call and issue instructions to his assistant, but afterward, he was back inside the room with her. He was pleased that Jason had used his initiative and had some clothes dropped off for him.

Sitting on the comfortable chair and working on his laptop allowed him to keep an eye on her. He’d taken a shower and changed into a pair of sweatpants and white cotton t-shirt. She stirred then and he was about to jump up when she settled again.

The sheets had moved from her chest and settled around her waist allowing him to see the ravages done to her body. He’d felt her ribs poking out when he held her and felt the tears gathering at the back of his eyes.

This was a sacrifice for her and he was going to swear on a stack of Bibles that if she managed to get through this, he’d never allow this to happen again. He couldn’t go through it a second time. His usually lively and vivacious woman looked like a rag doll and was so weak.

Whatever it is that she was carrying inside her, would be an only child. Sighing softly, he rubbed the back of his neck as he rose to go over and pull the sheets to cover her.

"Maxwell?"

"Baby?"

"I want you next to me."

"All right." Taking off his shoes, he slid in next to her and gathered her as close as he was able to.

"I feel so much better." She whispered into his chest.

"That's good to hear." His heart lurched at the feel of her bones against his fingers. "I love you, darling."

"I love you too."

Chapter 14

Alessia could hear them all the way up the stairs. She’d tried calling him when it was time for her to be discharged from the hospital and didn’t get him.

He’d been staying there for the entire week and she knew he had things to do, meetings to attend, stuff that he’d put off just to be with her. She was the one who’d persuaded him to go to a meeting he’d rescheduled three times already.

She was feeling a lot better and her week long stay in the hospital had managed to steady her. She was feeling stronger and was keeping food down.

Light foods, soup, crackers and vegetable smoothies as recommended by the doctors. She’d stared at herself in the mirror and realized she still looked a fright, hence the refusal to have friends coming to visit her.

Descending the stairs carefully, she made her way to the library where the argument ensued.

"I could hear you all the way up the stairs." Her quiet voice had them turning to face her. Maxwell rushed forward immediately. "I asked you to call me."

"I did and your phone went to voicemail." She leaned into him and closed her eyes.

"My assistant-"
