“What’s that? The Seattle contract? You haven’t signed it yet, right? Until it’s on paper you can back out at any time.”

“No, that’s not it. The problem is that I am fucking the hell out of Merri. I mean, we are doing it like rabbits. On the counters, on the floor…”

The old guy squirmed and cut me off.

“What’s your point?”

“Against the wall. In the shower,” I continued, enjoying making him feel uncomfortable.

“I got it! Is there a point to this?”

I stopped and smiled at him.

“Yes. I’m telling you this because Merri is my boyfriend. It took a long time for me to be able to say that. And now that I am, I’m not gonna stop. He is my boyfriend, and I love that man so much. So, if you have a problem with him working here, then you have a problem with me.”

His wrinkly lip twitched, staring at me. I could see his gears turning. If I played here and we won, it would be worth millions, if not billions of dollars to him. But to have that, he would have to accept what he didn’t want to, the fact that the love between two men was equal to his own.

“I…” he said, abandoning his thought.

“You what?” I asked confidently, leaning forward.

“I… can accept that,” he said, to my surprise.

“You’d be okay with Merri and me acting like any other couple when we’re here?”

“Like any other couple, you would need to sign papers removing the company from risk if things between you two went badly. But, yes, I could live with that.”

Staring at him shocked, I said, “You must really think I’m gonna make you a ton of money.”

He looked at me measuredly.

“I think you would be a fine addition to our team.”

“I’ll take that as a yes. Send the paperwork to my agent. I’ll play for the Cougars. But right now, I need to go celebrate with my boyfriend,” I told him, getting up and smiling as I left the office victorious.

“What happened?” Merri asked, with his father looking on.

“Coach,” I said, offering him my hand. “It’ll be a pleasure to play for you again.”

He broke into a broad smile while Merri looked at me stunned.

“We’re gonna do some great things, the two of us,” Coach said, pumping my hand.

“The three of us will do some great things,” I said, looking at the love of my life. Brushing Merri’s red cheeks with the back of my hand, I stared into his disbelieving eyes.

“We did it, Merri. I love you,” I told him, meaning it with all of my heart.

“I love you too, Claude,” he said before I leaned down and kissed him.
