“No. It was for my partner’s father. I only met him a few times.”

“Do you like New York?”

“No. But that’s probably just because of my partner’s asshole brother.”

“That’s too bad.”

“It takes all types in this world,” he said leaving the kitchen.

Not wanting to be alone, I followed him.

“So, what’s the nightlife like around here?”

Cali paused looking at me confused.

“Around here?”

“Yeah.”

He laughed.

“Alright. How about anything that can take my mind off of having just broken up with my boyfriend,” I said with a hint of flirtation. I had started dating Jason pretty quickly after coming out, so I still wasn’t sure how hitting on guys worked.

Cali stared at me for a second and said, “I’m going to a game night in a few. My boyfriend’s still in New York so the numbers will be off. Any interest in joining? It’s nothing fancy.”

“Yes!” I said not letting him finish. “Tell me when and where. I’ll be there.”

Cali’s suggestion was that we drive there together. He wasn’t the talkative type but he did tell me that he met his partner when his boyfriend was a guest at his bed and breakfast. Apparently there was drama surrounding it but he didn’t go into the details.

Considering how small the town was, I wondered what it was like for him to be gay, or whatever he was. There couldn’t be more than a few hundred people living around here. With a population that size, he had to be the only guy who dated guys for miles.

I lived in Florida and I had trouble meeting gay men. Of course, that might have had something to do with working in football, and having been in a relationship for the past year. But, I wasn’t even running into gay people on a monthly basis.

Living in a place like this had to be exceptionally lonely for Cali. Even surrounded by my team and with Claude as my best friend, I couldn’t deny how lonely I had felt.

I’m sure it had something to do with why I snapped. I could have been surrounded by a hundred people back then and I still would have felt breathtakingly empty. I could only imagine how Cali felt here.

Pulling into the driveway of a gorgeous two-story home, we were greeted at the door by Quin, a guy who was my size and unquestionably not straight. He owned the place along with his boyfriend, Cage, a man large enough to play football.

I was then introduced to Lou. He was Quin’s unquestionable gay roommate at University. His boyfriend was running late. And after that I met Kendall whose boyfriend was upstairs.

What the hell? Was this why I never met any gays where I lived? Did they all live here?

“Where are you visiting from?” Quin asked as he handed me a drink.

“Florida.”

They all looked at each other. Considering the politics in Florida, I didn’t have to wonder why they had.

“It’s not as bad as it seems,” I said defending my new home.

Lou, who was apparently the funny one, replied, “For who? Because from here, it seems really bad. And were in Tennessee.”

I looked at everyone unsure what to say.

Quin retorted, “Be nice, Lou.”

Lou responded, “Lamb chop, I’m always nice.”
