“You got it gorgeous,” Cage said looking back at us with a playful glare.

“We’re gonna have to make that up to him,” Nero decided.

“Yeah. I’ll invite him to dinner when we get back to school,” I told him.

“I thought he looked quite nice,” Nero’s mother volunteered.

After a few more hours of food and moonshine shots, the sun began to set and Nero, his mother, and I headed home. Miss Roman was in a very good mood. Nero was too. So, when I suggested that we have drinks on the veranda, everyone agreed.

“When did you move here?” I asked her.

“A long time ago. I can barely remember it anymore.”

“What brought you here?”

“I was pregnant with Nero,” she said putting her hand on his forearm with a smile.

“I can’t imagine raising a baby by myself. Did you know anyone here?”

“I didn’t know a soul.”

“Then, why here?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t want to move too far and I had always heard about this town.”

“I didn’t know anyone heard about this town,” Nero snipped.

I held up my hand quieting him. I was getting a lot of answers so I didn’t want him to accidentally change the mood. Seeing my gesture, he listened.

“That was one of the reasons I chose here, because the town wasn’t well known.”

“I hear a lot of people like small towns because it gives them a chance to be anonymous. Was that you?”

Her pleasant demeanor melted into deep thought. “That was one of the reasons.”

I matched her mood. “Did it have to do with what happened to Cage? I can’t imagine what it must be like to be told he had died when you knew he hadn’t.”

“It was very hard on me.”

“How did you even function after something like that?”

“I didn’t. Not for a long time.”

“I guess it helps to have someone supporting you as you did.”

“I didn’t have anyone.”

“What about Cage’s father? He must have been there for you, wasn’t he?”

“He didn’t want me to have Cage in the first place.”

“Oh no!”

“He was completely against it.”

“But he knew you were pregnant?”

“Yeah.”
