“And you told him what happened at the hospital?”

“I told him. And the look he gave me afterward, told me all I needed to know.”

“What do you mean? What did his look tell you?”

“That he had something to do with why I didn’t have my baby,” she said looking into my eyes with sadness.

“That’s horrible! What do you think he did?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you think he had Cage kidnapped?”

“I can’t be sure. All I know was that it changed me. I couldn’t get back to the person I was before and eventually, he didn’t want to have anything to do with me. That’s when I came up with a plan. I was going to get back what he took from me.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“One day I asked to come by his place telling him if I did, I would leave him alone forever. He agreed. When I got there, I made him his favorite drink and dropped something in it that I had gotten in Nashville. I had made a special trip there to find it,” she said with a smile.

“What was it?”

“It was something that would help me to get what I deserved from him but he wouldn’t remember.”

“And, that’s how I was born,” Nero said realizing.

“That’s how I got you,” she said squeezing his forearms and staring into his eyes.

“You drugged him?”

Her tight-lipped smile dropped. She let him go and sat up.

“I did what I had to do to get back what he had taken from me,” she said looking down.

“So, I’m only here because you…”

“Nero, do you mind getting me another drink,” I said cutting him off.

He turned to me knowing what I was doing. I stared at him wide-eyed and shook my empty glass. He looked like he was about to ignore me when headlights lit the veranda. It was Cage and Quin pulling up.

“I’m feeling tired. It’s been a long day. I hope you two don’t mind if I head to bed early.”

“Of course not. Do we, Nero?”

Nero met my unwavering glare and then relented.

“Of course not, Mama.”

She got up. “Then tell Cage and Quin I said goodnight.”

“We will,” I told her before she went inside and disappeared for the night.

When she was gone, Nero turned to me and snapped.

“What did you do that for?”

“What did I do?”

“You kept shutting me up like that.”
