“Oh, you still think I accidentally forgot my sleeping pad?”

“What do you mean?”

“What always happened after I told you I had forgotten it?” he asked me.

I thought back.

“You complained about it.”

Merri chuckled.

“After that.”

“It was endless. You never stopped complaining,” I said sincerely.

“I did, after you invited me to share yours.”

I paused.

“So, you intentionally forgot your sleeping pad to sleep on mine.”

“The dream was to get into your sleeping bag, but you were clearly not having that.”

“I thought you were joking when you suggested it,” I said, vividly remembering the incidents.

Merri shrugged, gave up his search for snakes, and then paddled.

“So, every camping trip we took was just you trying to get into my sleeping bag?”

Merri relented. “Maybe not every trip. But it was on my mind.”

“Wow!”

“Yeah, I was kind of an asshole back then,” Merri decided.

I stared at the back of his head.

“But you’re not anymore?”

“It depends on who you talk to. My ex might have an opinion on that. You two might see eye to eye.”

“I don’t think you were an asshole,” I admitted.

“I was. Especially to you,” he said, looking back.

“You had your moments. Or, specifically, one moment. But otherwise, you were the best friend I ever had.”

“Until I screwed it up,” he said, looking away.

“Until you screwed it up,” I agreed. “But, mistakes happen.”

He looked back again.

“That’s very kind of you. And, maybe one day you’ll forgive me?”

“Let’s not push it,” I joked.

“Right,” he said, looking away, embarrassed.
