“Wow! Anything else?”

“There’s some local politics stuff he’s also doing. But that’s more of a side thing than anything else. He wants to get the town officially put on maps. There’s been some resistance to the idea, but Cage has been helping him gain support for it.”

“So, what you’re saying is he’s been doing well… without me?”

“No, Lou. I didn’t say that.”

“But he is, though. Right? I mean, he’s probably never been better.”

“He’s probably doing as well as you are,” Quin said leaving it at that.

How well did Quin think I was doing? Sure, Sey and I had come up with something workable between us. But were either of us happy?

The reason I had fallen for him so quickly was how his flood of attention had made me feel. He used to text me every morning and night. He made me feel loved in a way no one else did.

But then all of that stopped. Nowadays, if he replied to my text on the same day, I had to be grateful. He had a busy life. There was no denying that. But sometimes I wondered where I ranked on his list of priorities.

‘I see you have a home game this weekend. I would love to see you play,’ I texted Sey.

It took a day, but he texted back. ‘I’ll leave two tickets at will-call for you.’

‘Maybe we could grab something to eat afterward?’

Sey never replied.

Somehow I convinced Quin to join me at the game instead of driving up to Snow Tip Falls to spend the weekend with his boyfriend. I wasn’t sure why he would. His boyfriend was smoking hot. But I was glad that he did.

Ever since Titus and I stopped talking, I’ve felt lonely. Titus was the person I told everything important to. I had really screwed things up with him at the estate. I blame my grief for my bad decisions. I wouldn’t have done any of that if my grandmother hadn’t died and my parents hadn’t stolen my inheritance. I would never have risked our friendship otherwise.

Titus had been my best friend. I loved him. I was happier whenever he was around. And I cared about how he felt. Seriously, I cared about his feelings. Who was I when I was around him?

I might not know who having Titus in my life had turned me into, but I did know who I was without him. I was an incomplete and sad person. I didn’t like that Lou. But I had done this to myself. Why had I kissed Titus? How could I ruin our friendship like that?

Taking our seats at the game, I was excited. I wasn’t sure why. I had seen Sey play before. It was at the beginning of the year. It was what led to our first date. We had met at the campus bar and after some flirting, he had invited me to watch him play.

I’m not a football fan, so I didn’t care that he was the starting quarterback. But there was a moment right before they got into that squat that they all do when he had looked up to where I was sitting and pointed at me. It was like he was saying that this was for me. And then he threw the ball halfway down the field for the game-winning touchdown. How could I not go out with him after that?

That didn’t explain why I was excited this time, though. I was getting less impressed by Sey every day we were together. But when the game started and our school’s defensive squad took the field, my heart thumped.

“There he is! There’s Titus,” I said almost giggling.

I had done my research as soon as I found out that Titus was on the team. I found out the number he wore and his position. He was one of the guys whose job it was to stop the other team’s quarterback from throwing the ball. He wasn’t one of the huge guys who ran into each other at the start of the play. He was the guy who stood at the end of the line and tried to sneak around the guys trying to protect the quarterback.

“Did you know that Titus has had ten sacks for the season?” I told Quin while not taking my eyes off of the field.

“That’s good, right?”

“That’s like, a lot,” I explained. “Doesn’t your boyfriend coach football? Shouldn’t you know that?”

“Until he figures out what I do working with my dad, I don’t need to know what sacks are,” he joked.

As soon as Quin said it, the first play of the game began. On cue, Titus faked left throwing his defender off of him, and then spun right. With no one in front of him, he shot toward the quarterback like a freight train. When he hit him, the crunch echoed through the stands.

The crowd was silent before exploding into cheers. Quickly getting off of the guy he had flattened, Titus flexed his muscles and roared. It was amazing. I couldn’t be more turned on if I tried.

“That’s a sack,” I told Quin proudly.

“And, now I know,” Quin joked. “Wow! What got into him?”
