For as long as I had been thinking about it, I needed a moment to gather my thoughts.

“Do you know that feeling when you have to tell someone something, and you know that afterwards they’ll never look at you the same again?”

“I don’t know what’s going on. But I promise you, there is nothing that you could say that would change the way I feel about you.”

His kind words brought my forehead to his chest. He had made it harder for me to tell him what I had to. Gathering my courage, I looked into his eyes.

“There’s something you don’t know about me because I haven’t told you.”

“What’s that?” he asked hesitantly.

“Do you know how I said that I was home schooled?”

“Yeah.”

“There’s a reason for that.”

“Which is?”

I took a final breath before my life would change.

“I’m a part of a family.”

Cali looked at me confused.

“Okay. So am I.”

“No. I mean that my family is involved with things that aren’t always legal,” I told him as my skin burned.

He looked away and thought about it. His mouth dropped open when he understood.

“You mean that your family is in the mafia?”

I cringed hearing the word.

“We prefer to call it a family, but yes. That’s what I’m saying.”

Cali stared at me, not hinting to what he was thinking.

“Why are you telling me this now?”

“Because I think there’s someone in town who was sent by a rival family. And I think he might be here to kill me.”

Shock washed across Cali’s face. He was a storm of emotions. When they settled, there was rage in his eyes. I thought it was directed towards me until…

“Hil, if anyone tried to hurt you, I swear to God I’ll…”

“Stop, Cali. Please. Don’t do anything to get yourself hurt. And, I can’t be sure of this. There’s just a car I saw parked out front which I again saw in town. It’s suspicious. It freaked me out enough that I had to tell you.”

“I’ll keep you safe. I promise you that, Hil. You will be safe.”

As much as what he said made me want him more, he had no idea what he would be up against. If this was a rival family’s problem-solver, he wouldn’t hesitate to kill the both of us. It was slowly dawning on me that I might have to protect Cali from himself.

“I think I need to go.”

“No!” he said, grabbing me again. “I won’t let you go. At least, not because of this. If you don’t want anything else to do with me, I’ll accept that. But I won’t let anyone run you off. I’ll fight with my last breath to have you with me.”

“And that’s what I’m afraid of,” I explained softly.
