When I said it, Cali caught himself. Letting go of me, he relented. Gathering strength from somewhere deep inside, he said, “I don’t want you to go. I’ve had enough people I love leave me. I can’t let you be another.”

His words broke my heart. There was depth behind it from a source that I didn’t yet know.

“And I don’t wanna leave you. I wanna stay here and have countless nights like the one we had last night. All I want is to be with you.”

“Then tell me how we should handle this. I trust you. I’ll do anything you tell me as long as it means that we can be together.”

Cali’s vulnerability made my heart hurt. He really was the perfect guy. Dillon was right. I couldn’t let him go. But at the same time, I needed to protect him.

“You also need to know that the person I saw might have been the one to run your mother off the road.” “What?”

“I can’t be sure. That’s just a guess but it would make sense.”

Cali looked away deep in thought. I grabbed his bicep, pressing my chest against his arm.

“You hate me, don’t you?” I asked dreading the answer.

He spun towards me, gripping me in his large strong hands again.

“Never. I will never hate you.”

“Then, what are you thinking?”

“That you might be wrong.”

“What do you mean?”

“There’s something I haven’t told you. It’s concerning my father.”

“What about him?”

“He might have been the one who ran my mother off the road. She won’t say why. And she can’t be sure either. But she seems to think it’s a possibility.”

I stared at Cali not knowing what to think. I was having a problem formulating words.

“Do you hate me now?” Cali asked, flipping the script.

“Of course not. It’s just that…”

“What?”

“I think you’re wrong.”

“But, what if I’m not? Would you still need to leave?”

I pulled away from him thinking about that. I hadn’t considered that the accident was because someone was trying to kill Dr. Sonya. The idea seemed inconceivable. Who would want to hurt someone like her?

“Do you still think you need to leave?” Cali asked drawing my attention.

“No,” I told him, surprising myself. “I’m not afraid of your father, whoever he is. I won’t run from being with you. I’m falling for you hard, Cali.”

Cali pulled me to him, sweeping me into his arms.

“And I’ve fallen for you,” he said bringing tears to my eyes.
