As the scenery rushed by me on my way back to campus, all I could think about was Hil. I wasn’t going to lose him. I would fight with my last breath to keep him. I wasn’t yet sure what that meant. But I was going to figure it out.

Remembering the feel of his soft skin under my fingertips, I felt a rush. The angles of his lean body gliding against my palm made me feel alive. He was someone I would run into a burning building to save. I would blindly jump off a cliff for him. And when I pictured his naked body again, I had to adjust my hardening cock as it fought against my jeans.

Lost in the thought of him, I was ripped back to earth when my phone rang. My first thought was that it was Hil. Scrambling to answer it, I glanced at the caller ID. It rocked me to my core.

“Dr. Tom, what is it?” I asked with a knot tightening in my stomach.

“Cali, I have some news about your mother’s situation. There was something on your her x-ray that looked unusual to me, so I forwarded it to a few specialists. It turns out that the surgery I discussed with you should be done as soon as we can schedule her.”

Blood rushed out of my face hearing his words.

“Why? What’s the matter?”

“It’s nothing that you need to be overly concerned about. It’s just that the longer we wait, the less her chances are of making a full recovery.”

“So you’re saying that if she doesn’t have the surgery soon, she might not be able to walk again?”

“Think of it more as, the longer we postpone the surgery, the lower her quality of life will be.”

“That’s serious.”

“Only if we put it off for too long. So, when can I schedule her in for the procedure?”

I wasn’t prepared for this. He had said that because we didn’t have insurance, the hospital was going to make us prove that we had the ability to pay. We didn’t have that type of money and I had no idea how I could get it.

“Can I get back to you on that?”

“Absolutely. But, remember, the longer you wait, the harder it will be for her to return to being the person she used to.”

Ending the call with Dr. Tom, I entered a daze. Where was I going to get that type of money? We barely had a bank in Snow Tip Falls. I didn’t know where to begin.

Distracted during all of my classes, I didn’t have it in me to drive back home. I didn’t know how I was going to tell any of this to my mother.

Growing up, it had just been the two of us. I was the man of the house before I even knew what that meant. But I had always done my best to take care of my mother. How was I going to take care of her with this?

“Okay, Cali, what’s up?” Titus asked from his desk in our dorm room.

I continued staring at the ceiling as I asked, “What do you mean?”

“First of all, you’re here,” he said adjusting his chair to face me. “Weren’t you excited about Hil? Why are you here instead of with him?”

“Is Lou coming over?” I asked about his boyfriend.

“I’m not trying to get rid of you. I’m asking because you seem even quieter than normal. And that’s saying a lot.”

I turned towards him finding his usual half-smile. I knew he was only trying to be my big brother, and I appreciated him for that. But I wasn’t sure what to say.

“You know you can talk to me about anything, right? Even about Hil,” he said sincerely.

I thought about that.

“I think our father tried to kill my mother,” I told him, relieving one of the weights from my shoulders.

“What?” he exclaimed shocked. “Why would you say that? What happened?”

I opened my mouth to speak before he stopped me.

“Wait, let me call Claude. We’re brothers. We should be talking about this together.”
