“Do you even know what pickled herrings are?”

“Sure. It’s herrings that have been pickled,” he said, as if trying to get away with something.

“Right. Just like how baseball is a ball with a base inside of it,” I teased.

“Oh yeah? Then you tell me what pickled herrings are, smart guy.”

I stared at him.

“Well, that’s easy.”

I stared at him again. “Glen, would you like to inform this city boy on what pickled herrings are?”

“I would be delighted to, Glen said, approaching us. “If you take a look at this,” Glen said, crouching to retrieve something from the shelf. “Now, where is it?”

Hil tapped me on my shoulder telling me he would be right back.

“Oh, here it is. This here is a dill pickle. It’s like that because of the vinegar that’s added to water when the pickle is soaked. If you take the same process and add it to a fish, like hearing, it changes the flavors and…” Glen looked around. “Where did Hil go? Should I wait for him before I continue?”

I turned around expecting Hil to be behind me. He wasn’t.

“Hil?” I said, scanning the room.

He couldn’t have gone far. He was behind me just a second ago.

“Hil?” I said, getting worried when he didn’t respond. “Hil!”

Terror washed through me. Racing down the aisles, I checked every floor and corner. It was then that I heard him scream.

“Hil!” I said rushing to the door.

It was in time to see a brutal looking man covered from his neck to his wrist in tattoos. In one hand he held a knife. In the other, Hil.

“Hey!” I shouted hoping the windows would shatter as I did.

That didn’t stop him. It barely slowed him down. Looking back at me, he opened his car door and shoved Hil in. Running towards them, I wasn’t quick enough to get there before he slipped in the driver side, started the car, and pull off.

It was a C-Class Mercedes. It matched the description of what Hil had said had been stalking him. This was the man who had tried to kill Hil twice. He had gotten him. I had taken my eyes off of him for a second and it had been enough.

“No!” I screamed as the guy drove away.

Rushing to my truck, I got in and sped off after them. It took only a moment to realize what the guy’s knife was for. One of my tires were flat. I had no chance of keeping up with them. Speeding out of town at the pace that they were, they would be gone before anyone could do anything about it.

My worst nightmare was coming true. I was losing Hil, and it was all my fault. I wouldn’t be able to catch him, and I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself.

Falling further and further behind the accelerating car, my will to go on escaped me. I drove until I couldn’t drive anymore. But with every passing second, my love disappeared into the distance.

I had lost Hil. What was I going to do now?

Chapter 15

Hil

I screamed as the man I loved receded into the landscape. I don’t know if it was out of rage or fear. And when I saw the steely look in the man who was taking me from him, I was ready to do to him what I was told that my father did to others.

“You had no right to do this. No right! Take me back right now,” I demanded ready to reach over and strangle him.

“You will do what I tell you to do,” he said menacingly.
