That did it. It’s sobered me up real quick. We were dealing with whether or not the guy I loved survived the night. This wasn’t a game. I couldn’t be acting like this.

“You’re right. I’m sorry,” I said to Dillon. “And you,” I said turning to Remy. “I know that you only have Hil’s best interest at heart. I shouldn’t have come at you ready to throw down. Let’s just get him back safe. Tell me what I need to do. I’ll do whatever I have to do to help.”

“Then go home.”

“Anything but that,” I said firmly.

“Remy! Let it go. Isn’t this the type of person you would want in a fight? Someone who’s willing to do whatever it takes to get your brother back?”

The tattooed asshole looked like he hated me. I was oaky with that. When he accepted that I wasn’t going anywhere, we retreated to the small round dinner table that was pressed up against one of the apartment’s sparsely decorated walls.

“Fine,” the asshole said, interlocking his fingers and leaning forward. “I’ve made a few calls.”

“And?” I asked.

As soon as my contact knows anything, he’ll call me back.”

“And in the meantime?”

“I don’t know. Maybe we fight whatever country bumpkin comes in after him next,” he said with a smirk large enough to burrow under my skin.

How could Hil and this guy be related? The two were nothing alike. Hil was the sweetest, kindest person I’d ever met. This guy was a hyena off his leash. The difference was mind boggling.

Not responding to his comment, I leaned back not saying a word. Hil’s safety was the only thing that was important right now. Maybe when this was all over, we could finish what we started. Until then, I just had to put up with it.

As the silence drew out, I could see Hil’s friend becoming uncomfortable. It was unfortunate. I was hoping that the two of us would get along. Hil had gotten along so well with my people. I wanted him to see that I could get along with his.

“You really are everything Hil said you were,” Dillon said, staring at me.

“How long did you know about the two of them?” Remy asked him.

“Hil is my best friend. He told me as soon as it happened.”

“So all those times I called you asking if you knew where Hil was, what? You were lying to me.”

Dillon looked away guiltily.

“Believe me, I didn’t want to. But he asked me to.”

“And you’re always loyal to your friends?”

Gathering his courage, he stood up to Remy.

“That’s right. Do you have a problem with that?”

The asshole smirked.

“No. I’m just sitting here wondering how I could become one of them.”

I stared at the two very confused about what I was seeing. Remy was staring at him while Dillon’s cheeks turned red.

“Are you two fucking flirting?” I asked pissed off.

“No!” Remy said seeming caught off guard.

“No,” Dillon replied with a lot less conviction.

It was then that Remy’s phone rang. Quickly answering it, he said, “What do you have? Uh-huh. I got it. Thanks,” he said, ending the call. “He’s still alive and he’s being held by one of my family’s rivals.”
